The Peace River (French: rivière de la Paix) is a 1,923 km (1,195 mi)-long river in Canada that originates in the Rocky Mountains of northern British Columbia and flows to the northeast through northern Alberta. The Peace River joins the Athabasca River in the Peace-Athabasca Delta to form the Slave River, a tributary of the Mackenzie River. The Finlay River, the main headwater of the Peace River, is regarded as the ultimate source of the Mackenzie River. The combined Finlay–Peace–Slave–Mackenzie river system is the 13th longest river system in the world.

This attraction has a beautiful view! There are also signs explaining Davis' life. It is worth the drive as its approximately 10 km out of town on the way to Edmonton. There is also a geocache present but we didn't have time to find it.

Having grown up here I feel a certain amount of bias towards this place. I think the valley is a lovely place to be in the spring and early summer. Green and lovely. Not a fan of winter though. Cold, snowy and dirty are not my favourite things! I always forget how lovely the street that travels along the river is. Such a postcard view for the people who live along that stretch.

The representative statue of 12 Foot Davis is in a small downtown park. It's a nice site and a good photo op, but it's not an attraction you'd drive miles to see - more of one to visit if you're in the area for other reasons. Getting photos of us at the foot of the statue was fun! :-)

This is a great lookout and is often overlooked by visitors but well worth the trip! It's only about 5 minutes south of town. It's not well signed, but if you follow the signs for AB Hwy 744 you will see it at the top of the hill. There is a picnic area, benches and some interpretive signage. The view is spectacular, especially if you can catch it near a sunset. The drive up to the lookout is also very scenic and offers some lovely snippet views of the river valley. If you decided to head back to Peace River, the view of the town is really neat to see coming down the hill. Alternatively you could continue south on Hwy 744 for approximately 30 minutes, and that will take you to the junction of Hwy 49 (or you could turn earlier at the junctions for Nampa (Hwy 680) or Jean Cote (Twp Rd 800)).

I have visited Figure Eight Lake many times in the past 4 years. I have seen the many faces which the area can show throughout the day and throughout the year. I highly recommend taking the time to visit this area.
There are many things one can do:
Hiking: there is a great walking/hiking trail which loops around the entire lake. The trail is great for all ages and even for the four legged friends. Please pick up after your pets.
Fishing: the lake is a great place to catch some rainbow trout whether it be in the summer or the winter (yes ice fishing is doable on this lake) - the lake also has many docks which one can fish off of. Please make sure to bring your WIN card and fishing license.
Canoeing/Kayaking: The lake is very calm and makes a great trip for canoeing and kayaking. Make it a short evening paddle or turn it into a day trip.
Camping: Great shaded camping sites in nature! This park does not feel like an over run campsite like other locations you might have visited. There is a self registration box on site.
You will not regret visiting Figure Eight Lake Provincial Park. Once you you visit for your first time, you will hear the lake calling you back time and time again.

The Catholic Mission was established in the 1870s/1880s and the church was built in the 1890s. Once part of a large complex of dormitories, farm and school buildings, the church and barn are all that remains. Serving as an Indian Residential School until 1907, St. Augustine's continued as a church-run boarding school until its closure Dec 1950.
There's a lay-by on the Shaftesbury Trail and some interpretive signs. You need permission in order to go on the grounds. The Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre offer tours of the church and grounds throughout the summer - call them for more information

Needed to get some information on attractions for the Banff/Jasper/Grande Cache area, and dropped by. They had a pretty good selection of Alberta specific brochures, and some good material for BC and the Yukon. They had a nice selection of local attractions too, and the helpful women there said they were always looking for more. The train station itself is pretty neat. There are three rooms on the ground floor that are 'period' furnished and they're working on putting displays upstairs.

Accommodation guests are welcome to use kayaks and canoes during their stay. We will also shuttle from up or down river locations. If you are not staying at our accommodation, you are welcome to rent kayaks or canoes and canoe trailer, minimum 3 boats for non-guests. We also offer guided rafting for groups of 5 or more guests.
