We stopped at the house on our way from the West Coast to Dublin Airport.
It was a good stopping point, about another 40 minutes on to the airport.
Ample parking, the house and Gardens were very interesting. Lots of information was provided. The map given away with entrance showed a lake walk, which was not done due to lack of time. However it did look interesting.
There was a fairy garden, set in the main "walled" garden. Good fun for little and big kids. The entrance fare was good value.
There is a restaurant and a few "shops" on site. The coffee was OK, but the food was disgusting and expensive.

I visit O Meara's every few months when passing through Mullingar and am never disappointed. The coffee shop is quiet, but is a great spot to catch up with friends or simply savour a cuppa. The garden centre has a super range of high quality plants and staff are always friendly and willing to give advice when needed.

The Royal Canal Way is a 146km cycle route across Ireland without any hills. It follows the bank of the Royal Canal which was built 1789-1817. The route is on gravel, grass, mud and tarmadadam. Flora and fauna are completely undisturbed. There is some beautiful 18th cent engineering to be seen.

Th Royal Canal footpath is a lovely place for a gentle stroll but it's a great pity that some dog owners are so inconsiderate of other users, in particular wheelchair and buggy users. All too often the path is polluted with dog excrement. Most dog owners clean up after their dog but a significant minority do not.

I had no cash with me and they don't accept cards, but they still allowed me to enter and told me to come back any other time and pay, and even gave my grandson his little bag of food for the animals. In this day and age there are very, very few places that would have done this, and it would have been so disappointing for my little grandson to be turned away. I didn't have to say a word, the lady suggested going ahead, and the two of us had a lovely day.

This church is steeped in history. Love the big old door. The interior is closed to the public. Would be lovely to see the interior. The scenery around it is fantastic.

A lovely statue, much like the one of Tony Bennett outside the Fairmont in San Francisco. A tribute to an amazing singer and one so beloved of so many. Great for a photo, meeting fellow travelers as it is so central and easy to find, and a good indicator to the visitors center.

Lough Ennell can be accessed from a few places and they're all pretty good for walking around. There is the caravan park area which is nice and in Spring the bluebells are gorgeous here. It's close to Belvedere house and Gardens which is also located on the lake but you need to pay entry to go in. There is lots of parking at the lake access area near the caravan park (free). Plenty of access for swimming in the summer too and the water is clean. It's has always been my favourite of the lakes for swimming in (even though the diving board at Lough owel is good too, just a smaller space). Just a short drive outside Mullingar (Tullamore side).
