The 8 Best Things to Do in Oia, Greece

March 27, 2018 Trinity Boughner

Oia is carved out of the cliffs, and visitors can see houses built for Venetian sea captains as well as the more typical "cave houses" of the villagers. You’ll find the pure white buildings with colorful roofs that are typical of Greek architecture, and you’ll probably enjoy poking around the town. But don’t breeze through in an hour—you must stay for the sunset. It’s legendary. Watch from a café, or, better yet, from a boat—you’ll be spellbound.

She is knowledgable and not pushy at all. Prices are very reasonable and she helps guide you in your buying decision. Wide variety of custom made goods for you to choose from. Highly recommended.

Nestled under vines you can enjoy their fantastic wines, overlooking the vineyard and enjoying the sunset behind it. My husband and I did, and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Amoudi Bay

Amoudi Bay is super popular with Santorini visitors, and with good reason. You can walk there or a quick cab ride puts you right in the midst of things. Advice: Get there a couple of hours before sunset and stake out your viewing location from one of the many cafes in the area. After watching the sunset, highly recommend Amoudi Bay Fish Tavern for dinner.

Sunset in Oia

Reviewed By Eric S - Minneapolis, Minnesota

The sunsets from many spots on Santorini are special but Oia is the most famous spot. Because of the island configuration, Oia provides an view unobstructed by other Islands (as does the lighthouse to the south). Oia’s sunset has a festive feel with hundred or thousands of fellow watchers lining the old castle walls who then spill into the streets to eat and drink after sunset. Worth a walk or drive to Oia town for sure.

Church of Panagia

Reviewed By Linda Y - Frisco, Texas

This is a lovely Greek Orthodox Church located in the large main square of Oia. It was originally constructed inside the walls of the Castle. The church was moved to its current location following the 1956 earthquake. The whitewashed exterior has a blue dome, arched windows, and pretty bell tower. There is a beautiful legend about a miraculous icon associated with the church. Sadly the doors were locked and we couldn’t enter.

This gallery stood out from the other businesses in the street. It was fresh and interesting with many beautiful pieces of art. We purchased an olive tree by Constantinos Valeas which really caught our eye as we wandered in. What a lovely find and quite unexpected.
