Neubrandenburg was comprehensively trashed by the advancing Russian forces in 1945, but miraculously the medieval city walls and several gates have survived both that experience and the Communist era. The walls and the immediately adjacent area are a delight (the rest of the city most definitely isn't!). The guard houses built into the walls at regular intervals are a particular delight. A pleasant walk with informative plaques in both German and English at regular intervals on significant structures or elements of the wall itself.

When I was in Neubrandenburg for a wedding I had some time to visit the Marienkirche which I a concert hall now. Destroyed at the end of WWII it was rebuilt after the unification of Germany as a great combination of old, gothic with new, modern architecture. I would have loved to see a fully restored gothic building; but sometimes compromises have to be made. Nevertheless, it is worth to visit that church, even without a concert and the entrance fee. The exhibition about gothic architecture in that region is very interesting. And the view over the entire surrounding landscape from the church tower is great. Every visitor who intends to enter the tower gets earplugs since the bell will sound every 15 minutes – it’s really loud there! I recommend that attraction.

Came here during a business-trip in the evening. Location is really nice, staff and barkeeper are spot on and the drinks are great! I ordered a Kentucky-Mule, which is my staple, and the bartender never heard of it. After telling him what ingredients a KM has, he mixed one together that was spot on! Great job! Would definitely recommend you visit!

The Stargarder Tor is in fact a combination of two gates in the northern part of the old city wall of Neubrandenburg. It is at one end of the Street Stargarder Strasse; at the other end is the city’s train station. I haven’t been in that city for more than 30 years. So, it was interesting to visit it again. I didn’t know that the term Stargarder Tor contains more than just a single gate. Beside two gates it also includes a building that was a customs office and a wall across the street from that building. Additionally there were two mills beside the outer gate, from which one is still there. I recommend the Stargarder Tor to everyone who is interested in historic architecture. One should go there with an open mind and open eyes.
