This bridge connects Bad Säckingen, Germany, on the north bank of the Rhine, with the Swiss village of Stein, on the south bank. It is also a pedestrian border crossing (unmanned). Having seen many such Bridges through central Europe, still I like this one, as a well decorated, well structured and architectonically beautiful specimen. Maybe 10 minutes walk from both the German and the Swiss railway stations, the walk is clearly indicated.

Eintauchen. Abtauchen. Auftauchen.
I really appreciate this place as it focuses on what is important in spa, like quality and cleanliness of the establishement rather than fancy receptions or silly decors that serves no purpose. Pools indoors and outdoors, steam saunas with aromas such as lemon or eucalyptus (there are 3 different ones), fire and ice baths, ranging from 12-40 degrees, rain shower cave and my favourite, the salty pool in the basement. 12 % salt makes you float like in the dead sea and the underwater music just makes you totally relaxed.

This is the centrepiece of Bad Säckingen's small but nice historical centre. A nice 14th century church, originally romanic then gothic then baroque in its latest instalment (18th century), dominates the central square (same name, Munsterplatz) with a kind of sedate, peaceful beauty. Inside is also worth seeing.

As a professional trumpeter, this museum has been on my list for a long time. The collection contains trumpets throughout the great range of its history, from 1664 to the present. You'll see natural trumpets and keyed trumpets and bugles made before the invention of the valve in the early 19th century. There are examples of the many kinds of valved trumpets that came with this new technology. There are also many oddly shaped and experimental trumpets. You will also see many paintings, posters, cartoons, and lithographs with trumpets. If you don't know, there is a great German legend about The Trumpeter of Bad Säckingen, which is why the exhibit is here.

Das Fridolinsmünster beeindruckt sowohl durch sein Äusseres wie sein Inneres. Wenn man in Bad Säckingen ist, lohnt sich ein Besuch des Münsters auf jeden Fall.

Rokokohaus offers quiet location within 10-15 minutes walk from train station. Theater, restaurants and quiet community surround this comfortable updated inn. We were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff on registration, at breakfast, and had easy access to accomodations and everything that we need. Great beds, pillows, linens, and bath facilities, excellent breakfast,

Cold winters just drive you to such places... from Switzerland (Stein-Säckingen station) it is just a short walk, crossing the unmanned border post on the old covered bridge on the Rhine. You pay for 2 or 3 hours, both for thermal pool and sauna and go. You have changing rooms and lockers, with a small armband for closing and opening. Then a shower and there you go! Thermal water pools are inside (small) and outside. The outside one is the best. I find it great to swim in the warm water while the air above is cold. It is not very large, however, but it has a small "river bath" around, like a half-circle separate canal where the water is propelled around and you can let yourself be transported. One more separate pool - that is inside, close to the (separate) sauna facilities - is characteristic for the very salty water; it is worth trying. After a while, we went to the sauna part. As very often, this is naked zone. There are several cabins with different sauna types; remarkable are the oriental one, with 70 deg steam, and the "swiss panorama", with 90 deg and a broad glass window overlooking the Rhine and Switzerland across (Aqualon stands on a small hill). Each cabin has then showers (classical ones and "bucket showers", with a wooden bucket of cold water placed high up and a rope to tip it over... to try!). All cabins are outside! So walking to and fro is a bit of thrill due to the cold winter air. Paths are covered with anti-slip wooden tiles, so you do not really need flip-flops.
