Portland Basin Museum is housed within the restored nineteenth century Ashton Canal Warehouse in Ashton-under-Lyne. The museum combines a lively modern interior with a peaceful canal side setting. It is an exciting family friendly museum, with something for all the family.
This museum is a great place for young and old. Take a step back in time. Show the children how the older generation lived. There are life like statues a oldie public bar. Old chip shop. Outside toilet. Many more things to see. There is also boats to see on the camel. A lovely little cafe for tea and cake. Its also free admission.

For anyone who want to keep fit & pound the Tarmac-,Medium to long distance running - this should be one of their Objective's.
When running along the the road heading out of A-U-L towards the Ashton Barracks towards Moseley. The climb is challenging , but gradually rising to the Ridge above the Golf Course . Then swing left along the Ridge towards the Ancient Pike- in Winter the challenge increases due to Low Cloud base or even Fog - this makes running in the clouds a whole new Meaning.
Then I have run downhill towards Ashton - Oldham road near St Damian's School - here one can cross the busy road towards Daisy Nook or Head towards Oldham &!return to A-U-L one the old road.
A very good route & good warm up.
Try it for a new Challenge & enjoy the Panoramic View.
What are you waiting for - Go for it !!

A little bit of peace whilst Exploring an old industrial area. Cafe was not open last time I visited but hopefully will not be forever. Nearby cafe in garden centre is open and also a cafe serving good bacon muffins and coffee at Daisy Nook visitor centre.

Cost to skate is £6 plus £2 if you need to hire skates. The staff are really nice, I really enjoyed the game of limbo that they put on. Food and drink prices were OK. All the kids were pleasant and helped one and other...MoreThanks for the feedback. I would just like to confirm the cost is £6 including skate hire, £4 if using own suitable skates and free to spectate. Thanks again.

This place has rebranded itself and its facilities are yet to catch up with its lofty ambitions. Food overpriced and served in strange cardboard containers, not sure what they have against plates. The outside space is still under construction and very small and the farm itself almost sidelined There are much better places out there and perhaps because I've been to loads of its competitors over the years I'm more aware of how lacking this place is. The price is my main issue and its never a good feeling when you leave a place feeling annoyed rather.

A lovely cobbled outdoor area - great on a warm day. Nip over the bridge and enjoy a walk too. There was a lot of reclamation activity going on with people restoring old canal boats and it was interesting to hear about the history and enthusiasm
