We found them open just before lunch by the skin of our teeth. We were most fortunate as the guide they gave us of the city is excellent. Our tour would not have been so enriched without the brilliant staff. The lady spoke excellent English...MoreHello, Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your experience following your visit to the Tourist Office, we are delighted that you enjoyed the visit of the town and our services. Jean François Champollion, the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphics, was born in Figeac in 1790. The Museum of Writing takes the visitor on a journey following Champollion’s footsteps that gives them the opportunity to take part in the adventure of the written word and consider its place in our future world.
Fascinating museum particularly if you're interested in language and history. Champollion decoded the Rosetta Stone. Museum covered his history and that of language and languages around the world. Very well done.
PS original Rosetta Stone is at the British museum.
Art gallery had an associated exhibition round the corner.

This is all that remains of the old Abbey from the town developed in the middle ages.
Here you also have a side chapel highly decorated with beautifully carved and painted wooden panels.
The church itself is stunning and certainly one of the most imposing and majestic we have visited and we have seen many.
The sun shone brightly hence a kaleidoscope of stunning colours cascaded through the church and it was adorned and aglow with wonder as it bounced off the intricately carved stonework and further enhancing the extraordinary deep colours in the stained glass windows.
The pulpit is worthy of note.
The main altar is exceptional and flanked on either side by two pictures of the Lord on the cross and being taken down off the cross with golden clad figures in attendance. Utterly superb and beautiful beyond description.
A truly stunning interior yet not overly adorned.

The museum just happened to be opened when we passed and we were so surprised at what it had to offer! Although the fellow in charge said he didn't speak English well, but he did a very good job to explain some of the intricacies of propellers on planes - WOW! Everything is in French with no translation, but some of these things need none. Recommend this little museum!

Knight templar commandery, 13 cty, 600m2 compleatelly rennovated and furnished - time travel :-), bistro in court,
Beautiful middle age fort in the middle of Figeac, templars and Pilgers have been here 700 years ago. The host is so friendly, picked us up from the train station, we could visit the whole building. The rooms are nicely decorated, nothing fancy but done with love. No but a wonderful history in this place. If in Figeac a must place to visit. And great for kids.
