We are a vintage railroad with approx 20 000 visitors every year. We are running our steam train every Sunday during June through August, every Saturday during July and August and Tuesday to Thursday from July 8th to August 7th. The first train leaves at 11AM and the last train is back at 5PM. Every day with train traffic we run 4 trains with steam engines and 4 trains with at DMU from 1950's. Anten-Graefsnaes Railway - AGJ - is a 12 km long and mostly just 891 mm wide living museum operated by a nonprofit organization.
Anten is a small community situated along the 160 km Retro Road (“Retrovägen”) running from Gothenburg to the village Nossebro in the north.
The driving distance between downtown Gothenburg and Anten-Gräfsnäs main railroad station via “Retrovägen” is about 50 km.
Anten is easy to find by using the GPS coordinates: Latitude: N 57º 59.308′ and Longitude: E 012º 26.505′
At Anten railroad station a 12 km old narrow gauge track is still left, but now as the museum society Anten-Gräfsnäs Railway, AGJ, with train traffic as it looked like a hundred years ago.
Start the trip from Anten and travel with the steam train or rail diesel car to Gräfsnäs and its ruined castle among other historical activities at arrival.
Before departure you have to take a look at the old railway environment which is preserved with station building, engine stables, the garden around the station and its café. Anten is also the center of the AGJ museum railway activities.
Buy a ticket at the ticket office in the waiting room at station building. You will get an old fashioned cardboard ticket, of the type that was frequently used in older days.
Ticket prices are moderate and credit cards are accepted at the office in Anten.
Close to the ticket office you will find toilets, souvenirs, ice cream and an open-air café.
Get on board and take your seat. It´s soon time for departure. A short signal with the steam whistle announces that the engine begins to move.
On the journey the steam engine makes a stop at Kvarnabo for water fill up. Here you can disembark for a short pause at the old station environment and listen to a guided historical information about the railway, its engines and cars.
In Gräfsnäs the train stops for approx. 15 minutes until the journey continues back to Anten, but the time table gives you suitable alternatives for later return. During the stop the steam engine is turned around on the turn table by lot of hands from enthusiastic children mostly.
As an option the AGJ society celebrate 50th anniversary next year (2015).
Me with family and friends will definitely come back next summer – see you also then.

Kvarnbyn is a neighbour hood of old small houses from the days when people worked in the industries around the falls at Kvarnbyn. You can walk around the neighborhood but not visit the houses. There are two museums, with short opening hours, check the internet for those. In the area are a few restaurants for food and bathrooms. In Stadsmuseet you can rent a device to walk around in the neighborhood and learn about the area.

The village of Alingsås is simply romantic. Walking along the River, seeing the small Castle, and letting the kids walk around the penned up animals is a good thing.
Brought the grandchildren here. It was a successful day trip.
Probably not a village to go shopping...... some nice architecture, lots of green, and a place to take the dogs also.
