Niamey (French pronunciation: [njamɛ]) is the capital and largest city of the West African country Niger. Niamey lies on the Niger River, primarily situated on the east bank. It is an administrative, cultural and economic centre. Niamey's population was counted as 978,029 as of the 2012 census; the Niamey Capital District, covering 670 km, had 1,026,848 people. As of 2017, population projections show the capital district growing at a slower rate than the country as a whole, which has the world's highest fertility rate.

This is the largest of the five Niamey markets, with every kind of ware from food to cloth and jewelry.
Spending time at the Grande Marche is one of the most enjoyable ways to pass the hot hours of a Niamey afternoon. One can find everything there: traditional outfits, beaded jewelry, shoes, pots, school supplies, stereo equipment, bed spreads, sunglasses, mosquito nets - and anything else one may be searching for. The market is vibrant and normally packed with people, so keep an eye on your wallet, though there is no need to be too afraid of theives. Remember to bargain, and keep your eyes on where you're walking, as the paths are often cluttered with goods and sometimes puddles.
After shopping, I recommend lunch at the Baobob restaurant, on the road the connects the Grande Marche and Round Point Maourey. They have great Senegalese dishes.
The Petite Marche is also worth a visit, and has lots of food items, housewares, cloth, and calabashes. Ignore the little boys offering to carry your bags, and they will eventually leave you alone. Unless, of course, you want someone to carry your bags.

Built thanks to Lybian help, this mosque is big and grand, but nothing really special in terms of architecture, history or decor...
There isn't much to visit in Niamey, so might as well check this out, but definitely not one of th must-see mosques in Africa.

This art museum, a repository of Nigerian culture, also contains a library.
The museums consist of several pavilions each hosting a small exhibit (art, uranium, traditional customs, weapons...) as well as a small zoo. It is opposite the Hotel Gaweye, and is easily accessible... Staff was very helpful, and this is certainly the main site in Niamey!

Cette ferme pédagogique et écologique est à visiter avec des enfants. Le propriétaire est très engagé et fier de la faire visiter et c'est justifié!
A voir absolument!
