Hissarya is a small, sunny town 50 minutes drive from Plovdiv. Besides many mineral Springs, you will see a preserved ancient Roman fortress. So much history gathered in one place. It's worth seeing. An extra impression - the streets are dirty and the park is neglected, uncovered build structures and building rubbles. Probably the town is poor, but that can not be an excuse for the negligence and laziness of the local municipal administration.

We stayed in Hissarya for a few days and decided to visit this historical place. It is located a few kilometers from the village of Starosel. You should go there by car and there is quite a big parking area with a very small shop (booth) selling some souvenirs and stones. There is a road, about 600 meters, leading up the hill to the Thracian temple which is on the top of a hill from where you can see far away.
The chamber is very well preserved (when it was excavated, the roof had fallen into the temple and only the roof was re-built) and there are photos of artefacts, found in the area, and some info boards. It was very interesting to listen to the facts the professional guide was telling the visitors. But I think it's only in Bulgarian. On the opposite side of the hill, you can see a bath for wine that was used in the rituals. For a family - 2 adults and a kid we paid 6 leva (about 3 €).
When you come from Starosel to the temple, on your left, there is a Thracian tomb with several columns which you can visit free of charge. There is also a small chapel built on the ruins of an ancient church - "Sveti Spas".

Hisarya is famous for its healing mineral waters. The town is one of the oldest and most popular balneological and spa centres in Bulgaria. The mineral spring "Momina Banya", which is fed by the spring called "The spring of Youth".
The mineral water is used for the treatment of kidney and urologic diseases, gallbladder diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, as well as musculoskeletal diseases.
The water is slightly mineralized, colorless and odorless and has a pleasant taste. Can be drunk on the spot.
This spring is located in a beautiful park and is completely free. Unfortunately, there are many steps and is unsuitable for people with disabilities. There are large hotels and good restaurants nearby. The local transport is an auto train, will take you to the old town.

The museum is small but well organized and interesting. I think it is a good place where you can get an idea of the history in the area, and spend hours useful time, especially with children. Included in the 100 national sites of Bulgaria.

This is a natural mineral water spring, located in the park of the same name. The water is healing and recommended for people with gastrointestinal problems. A bit on the side is another spout with water that helps for problems with the eyes. A lot of people go there evry day with vessels which they fill with the healing water.
The legend says that in the olden times there was a very pretty maiden living in the area who was taken by the Turkish bey. She never showed any signs of love and affection to the bey which drove him crazy. One day, the bey had some dear visitors and he decided to break the stubborn beauty by humiliating her in front of his guests. She was forced to serve the desserts naked with her body spread with rose oil. When she reached the bey, she hit him on the head with the heavy tray with sweets and killed him instantly. She was sentenced to be burnt at the stake. Her body was spread with tar and the fire was started. She never gave a cry of pain, she just shed 2 tears that fell on the ground and the healing spring, that we know today, streamed at that very place.
