We stopped in at the Waterways Wildlife Park in Gunnedah to break up the driving between Coonabarabran and the coast. We had some stops along the way and had heard great things about the Waterways park and they were true. You can get up close and personal with most of the animals especially the koalas who are very tame and relaxed but there are also lots of other animals here that are great to interact with. Emus, kangaroos, unicorns, wombats and dozens of types of birds all around.
It is a smaller park but we have been finding that we are enjoying the smaller parks more than the big ones as you get more time with the animals and less time fighting crowds. This is a really great park, we wish we had more time here and we hope to make it back this way in the future.

The Gunnedah Rural Museum was a bit of an unscheduled stop for us on our drive around Australia a few weeks back. We had just finished at the wildlife park and were continuing on our way as per our itinerary when we spotted the museum sign and our older brother being into engines and anything mechanical told us we had to stop. There was so much more than just the engines and old machinery, it was like a time warp into the past with clothing, typewriters etc a lot of stuff that has now been replaced by newer technology. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and there were all sorts of excellent things for everyone of all ages to see. Definitely a worthwhile stop if you ever find yourself in Gunnedah.

The building seems to be a movie theatre, exhibition centre and the Gunnedah information centre all rolled into one.
We discovered it by chance as we were looking for the information centre.
Can't comment on the cinema & exhibition facilities as we were only passing through and had very limited time.
However, the tourist information centre is fabulous and we found the staff there very friendly and helpful.

Porcupine Lookout is located on Porcupine Hill. There is a sealed road leading up to the lookout which is short and not overly winding for those who don't cope with bends. Great to view the town of Gunnedah and especially lovely at sunset. Plenty of flat space to stand but you will need to supervise younger children.
