Tons to experience, fishing, swimming, hiking and climbing the Duke's Nose. Stopped at the Whangaroa pub called The Marlin for a few beers and wonderful local people to talk with. Watched a boat pull-in the the Whangaroa Deep Sea Fishing Club with a large Striped Marlin. The harbour is full of history as well.

The water-taxi 'Waihi' is a comfortable purpose built vessel on which to enjoy the magnificent scenery and interesting history. Knowledgable local skippers share their stories of the harbour. The colonial and early contact of the 1800's and Whangaroa's busy days of the 1900s where the economy was based on fishing, boat building and the kauri timber trade. Whangaroa Harbour is hard to beat for pristine scenery. It is a beautiful and uniquely idyllic place. The natural beauty of the area shines through: pure nature in all it's glory. The outer reaches have amazing outcrops and rock formations which tumble into the lush green bush growing right down to the waters edge. There are many beautiful Beaches and bays only accessible by water. Be picked up from Lane Cove walking track and be returned to Totara North, Lunch at Kingfish Lodge, or take our 90 minute Discover Whangaroa Harbour Tour.
Whangaroa Harbour is a series of picture postcards. The trip around the harbour shows the varied rock formations both inside and outside of the heads. Mark's commentary on the history of the place is interesting and entertaining. His boat rides well, you stay dry and spend the time wondering how you can get to live in this idyllic place.

St Paul's Rock is a very accessible view point above the stunning Whangaroa Harbour. It only requires a medium fitness level to walk and for the final bit climb to the top. If you're in the area it's definitely worth doing. You drive up above the trees and start the walk through paddocks. The prominent landmark was given the name by British explorers in the early 1800s because of the strong resemblance to the dome of London's St Paul's Cathedral. Looking down from the top of the rock you will see the small Red Island where the English ship Boyd sunk in 1809, after most of the crew and passengers were killed by Maori. The remnants of the ship were discovered in the late 1960s by legendary New Zealand divers Kelly Tarlton and Wade Doak.

What a stunning and beautiful place Whangaroa Harbour is, and to see it from Whangaroa Yacht Charters boat Reflections II was the best. We sailed, swam, kayaked, fished and had a sumptuous organic, homemade lunch. The scenery was spectacular and the hosts were very gracious.
We recommend this great day out to anyone.
