Lighthouse of Cabo Polonio

going to the lighthouse is a must do experience in Cabo Polonio. It's very cheap and not impossible to go up, but a bit claustrophobic. Anyways, great view and you can see all the village and the sea lions.

Medanos de la Barra de Valizas

the quiet Beaches are beautiful but you can't miss the dunes. Wear a big hat, slide from the dunes and enjoy a different scenery. You can see a lot of marine animals too. Walk to Cabo Polonio if you are hot-resistant and relax, meditate, enjoy.

Bosque de Ombues

Reviewed By colincclark - London, United Kingdom

We visited Uruguay in winter (June) and stayed in Punta del Diablo. To get to the Bosque (Portuguese) or Monte (Spanish) de Ombues, which is a park reserve near Vallizas in Eastern Uruguay filled with old Ombu trees only found in the pampas regions of Uruguay and Argentina; we had to take a bus from Punta del Diablo to Castillos. From Castillos we had to get a bus to Vazillas, and then from Vazillas we had to get a bus to the bridge about 8km outside of town (puerte Vazillas). When we arrived after this long and arduous journey we were met by the park warden who stays at the park and, he told us, has been working there for 22 years. Great, we thought! But no. Apparently only one guy is licenced to take people into the park (accessible only by boat from puerte Vazillas), and that guy had decided to not bother turning up that day. The warden called the guy, but they guy said he was not coming in. The warden did ask the local fisherman to take us in, but no-one wanted to get into trouble so no-one would take us. We told the warden about our plan to walk the rest of the journey along the bank of the river. OK, he said. You might make it! We proceeded on, and much to our surprise and dismay, we then saw the warden pass us in his boat on the river! Unbelievable. The fields we had to cross were muddy and wet. There was also a fast flowing stream to cross (about 5m wide). It was waist high and getting very dark and cold out so we decided to quit and go back. An unpleasant experience due to the lack of infrastructure and lack of good will in the area by the locals and officials. Do not visit in Winter because the warden and locals will not care for your safety and you may find you travel all this way for nothing.
