Szombathely (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈsombɒthɛj]; see also other alternative names) is the 10th largest city in Hungary. It is the administrative centre of Vas county in the west of the country, located near the border with Austria. Szombathely lies by the streams Perint and Gyöngyös (literally "pearly"), where the Alpokalja (Lower Alps) mountains meet the Little Hungarian Plain. The oldest city in Hungary, it is known as the birthplace of Saint Martin of Tours.

I have visited the nice boat lake (Csónakázó-lake) and park around. There are many ducks and sometimes even beautiful white swans. The park is relaxing, clean and there are paths for running and alleys for cycling. Lovers of fishing can also enjoy their passion in special designed spots. There are also some original wooden chairs for visitors to sit and relax when it's sunny and small Playgrounds for kids.Tourists can also rent boats to enjoy even more the landscape and hidden beautiful spots. I recommend it to all lovers of nature, biodiversity and sport. In the same area, visitors can discover an interesting Village Museum and a nice forest, some 4 km away that can be reached by bike for some valuable tete-a-tete with Mother Nature.

Szombathely is a mid size Hungarian town. Despite a lovely square most Western European visitors would pass it by on the way to Balaton. Once a year this city however holds one of the most spectacular festivals celebrating its roman past in Europe. In the heart of the town there is a reconstruction of a roman walled fort, with roman Gardens and arch. The locals all dress up and walk about the hundreds of little stalls covering almost every inch of the inner town. There is a wide mix of food and drink stalls open into the wee hours and the atmosphere is friendly. Basically it's a great festival and a hidden gem in Europe. Get there soon while it's cheap and not too commercial in the sense of gearing itself to rip off tourists. Now it's authentic and well worth a long weekend. The roman museum itself it established and has many interesting artefacts housed in modern facilities which look great. Most of the exhibits are in German and English which was welcome.

The museum is closed during wintertime, what I see as big disadvantage, because is situated inside the town and connected with going out for a walk is quite pleasant time.
