Some of Holland's gentry, tradesmen, bankers, apparantly could compete with say contemporary Italian nobles. Here you can see what their house in Holland looked like. How to enjoy wealth when your calvinistic Dutch mentality tells you not to show off and you do not have a family owned castle? Here is the answer.

Rarely do you visit a place you have seen online or in magazines for so long and it matches or exceeded your expectations. The windmill area at Kinderdijk doe that and more. this entire area is picturesque beauty. We even got to go into a working, spinning windmill. Amazing experience. Thank you volunteers.

The Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage site is a unique icon of Dutch water management and control. All the phases of the history of our struggle against water are still visible here. The unique collection of 19 mills in an authentic Dutch landscape is an eye catcher. Museum windmill Nederwaard shows how families lived and worked in our mills around 1900. And in Museum windmill Blokweer you can experience working as a miller. View our multi-screen film in the Visitors Centre, located in the former steam-driven pumping station. Get on board of our electric vessel, the Prince Friso, and view Kinderdijk from the water. Feel the wind, smell the water and listen to the sound of the windmills. The Kinderdijk World Heritage site is open almost the entire year!
The landscape of all 19 windmills is breathtaking! The welcome center video was informative and prepared you for your journey. The walkway is very good, be prepared to walk A LOT! But it is very worth it! Getting to go into 2 windmills, one that is working is an unforgettable experience. I'm very grateful I was able to experience this history.

We had a great and relaxing day at Thermen Binnenmaas. There is enough space for parking and the welcome was very warm. Friendly and professional staff. It was our first time in this Spa and we will go back again. Everything is clean and new, beautifull garden, and inside i loved the rainforrest shower very much. The food was delicious and again in the restaurant very friendly and helpfull staff. I had a hamam treatment and it was very good and relaxing. A lot of choice of sauna's inside and outside in the garden. The lockerrooms were also clean and spaciously set up. What I also like about this place is they have a maximum amount of visitors a day.

Come to the foot ferry, operated by volunteers of Zuid Hollands Landschap on wedenesday, Saturday and sunday between 12.00 and 17.00
Cross the river and land on the sophiapolder island. 80 hectares of nature. A reserve for birds. Peregrine falcon, hobby, spoonbill, nile goose, osprey, kingfisher, seagull, kazark, shoveler, great crested grebe. You can see them all. The island is flooded daily at high tide. sometimes even a sea eagle will come over from the Biesbosch.
In the area a beaver has its stronghold. you can spot it at dawn.

Why has it taken us 30+ years to visit Dordrecht and discover the delights and charms of the old city centre. It's a wonderful city with a rich history and there is a really inspiring time just strolling around the old streets, squares and canals to soak in the atmosphere and learn a little of the history here.
And the Grote Kerk is one of the most splendid buildings in Dordrecht - an icon, Magnificent in both its interior and exterior. We were intrigued by the size of the structure and wondered how they managed to get in the foundations for such a huge building in what must be difficult sub-soils. Any way - they did it and we all can visit this great church. Try the top of the tower as well - magnificent views.

Being a Dutchmen myself and a tourist in my own country, I was still surpised about the historical beauty and importance of Dordrecht. Walking through the city centre we enjoyed the nicely restored buildings. The streets were quiet, clean and people friendly and helpfull. Apparently in Dordrecht the fight for human rights, e.g. freedom of speech (proclaimed in "De Ware Vrijheid"), started late midle ages and defended as first by the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt, but were killed during that struggle. You can stilll see the role the city Dordrecht palyed during the Dutch "Golden Ages" since most of it is well preserved. It's worth to take a visit to this gorgeous little city near to Rotterdam.

Six centuries of Dutch paintings. A rich collection and temporary Exhibitions, a high quality restaurant and a well stored museumshop. Well worth a visit.
Interesting to learn more about works of local Dordrecht Dutch masters (Ary Scheffer, his brother Hendrik Scheffer, and others). There are famous Rembrandt’s works on display.
I loved the area dedicated for children to make their own art. Marvelous idea
Admission is free with Museumkaart.
