The Episcopal Museum of Vic (MEV), founded in 1891, houses a magnificent collection of medieval art with paintings and sculpture from the Catalan Romanesque and Gothic periods. The collections of precious metals, textiles, wrought ironwork, glass and ceramics offer a comprehensive journey through the history of liturgical and decorative art in Catalonia. This highly prized collection, including over 29,000 pieces, is exhibited in a new building on a site adjoining the Cathedral, equipped with state-of-the-art exhibition facilities. Due to the exceptional interest of the museum's collections, in 2001 the museum was declared a museum of national interest by the Government of Catalonia.

Driving, looking for the monastery is a pleasure in itself because one passes through beautiful natural forest roads where autumnal colors and mushrooms abound, following the meandering Riu Ter. The monastery itself is beautifully situated and as majestic as other famous catalan monasteries. However this one is particularly interesting for the Exhibitions proposed within the old walls. It is not just a restoration job but a whole history of the time exhibited within the walls with great depth and understanding . The miniature reproductions of the rooms depicting a functioning 9th century monastery, the medieval reproductions, the sense of belonging to a special past of Catalogne make this visit a very special one

Templo Romano de Vic

Reviewed By springbank - Greve, Denmark

An ancient Roman temple located in the uptown area of Vic dates from the 2nd century, the golden age of the Roman Empire. A short walk from Vic's Plaça Major on Pare Xifrer street, check out this Roman temple discovered in 1882 underneath an 11th century castle. It is situated on one of the highest spots of Vic (Ausa, the Roman name for Vic). It Is build out of sandstone found in the area around Vic. It is about 19 meters long, 10 meters wide and 11 meters high. In the 11th century, the temple was literally covered by the structure of the Castle of els Montcada, which later became the residence of the Veguers and finally, the prison of Vic. Not until 1882, during the demolition of the old castle, the workers spotted the remains of a Roman temple among the ruins, and in very good condition. And enough is left to let one imagine how it would have been originally. The reconstruction lasted for 77 years (1883-1959), but it is currently one of only two Roman temples throughout Spain to have been preserved practically complete. The temple, built on a podium, consists of a cella (small chamber) and an atrium with 8 columns. Two of the walls of the cella were found almost intact.
