The Usajingu Shrine is the head shrine for over 40,000 nationwide. The main hall is designated as a national treasure and is said to be the model for most Hachiman shrines.
A lot walking and stairs are involved in visiting this very large temple complex. We did, however, see some elderly people moving slowly through the grounds and even a few in wheelchairs. The lower level complex has broad walkways, temple buildings, ponds with lovely Bridges, and stairs leading up the hill to the main buildings on the upper level. Many sub-buildings and tourist shops are spread about.
The main shrine is an unusual double structure, in the typical red and white colors of Shinto shrines. It was very difficult to get a glimpse into the main shrine building. The angle and placement of the doors prevented good sight lines. We were impressed to read that the shrine’s prestige is second only to Ise, where we were on a previous trip.
Many worshippers and tourists visit daily so it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowds. Plan to spend a good deal of time here as there are many buildings to see and a lot of walking to do.

Expensive entrance fee which the park does not have anything much except some kangaroos which you can't feed, same monkeys and donkeys and hamsters to carry.
Pay another fee to get on safari truck to feed the wild animals. This is rather fun as there are tigers and lions to feed, but for the price we paid it is not worth the visit.

The grounds are very extensive and the equipment and the facilities are shown well. Tasting is well organised. Neither the red nor white wines seen to be able to agree with my taste buds. Exception is the champagne which I can highly recommend. In view of all the huge facilities it is amazing that only 160.000 bottles per year are produced in a large variety of blends. Lunch was very good and tasty. The set menu with Oita specialities can be recommended.

I wanted to see this town and visit the showa street area as advertised in Japan National Tourism Organisation. Walking along the narrow streets, takes you back in time. There are shops displaying many old artifacts from the 1950's to 1960's in amongst the usual tourist souvenirs, which was a pleasant experience. The area is not large. The shops sell much of the same things but we did enjoy the chance to visit. There is a museum that you can visit for a cost or do what we did and just walk around the free view areas. One small family run restaurant by the name of Ootoraya advertised that they had not changed their prices for 35 years. We had lunch here and found the home style Japanese cooking to be quite enjoyable and plentiful. Five of us had lunch for 2,000 yen. If you are going to visit Usa shrine dont forget to do the slight side trip to this town for a short visit and if it is around lunch time check out the family run restaurant Ootoraya.

Lots of examples of kote-e (trowel / plaster art). Earlier, we were taken on a tour of local kote-e in the city ... and we got to try our hand at making our own.
There is an incredible $10,000 display that ... apparently, they used to light on fire and send out to sea during funerals. So beautiful!

About 20 minutes from the town of Ajimu-machi, this is a beautiful place to see! There is a 10 minute trail from the parking lot that follows the stream to the waterall through a canyon with steep walls and thick vegetation. The path is wet and slippery and downright treacherous in some spots but the views are lovely. The waterfall is narrow and falls 279 feet (85 meters) down a straight cliff to a pool below.
There is no charge to see the falls, but parking is 200 yen for cars. There is a bathroom facility near the parking lot.

Pretty Bridges. There are some hollowed out caves on the far bank that were apparently used to hide during WWII. It's cool by the river. There was a hands-on exhibit at the giant salamander place that let you construct your own bridge. They made a bamboo frame, put the stones on it (including the keystone), then took the frame away.
