In northern Romania near the Ukrainian border and once the capital of Moldova, today Suceava is a city of just over 100,000. Though fairly industrial, the city does have some great historical attractions, like the 14th-century Princely Court fortress and several medieval churches. The Bucovina History Museum is also popular. Best of all, Suceava is the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous painted monasteries of Bucovina, set amid the gorgeous countryside just outside of the city.

This group of monasteries, painted both inside and outside, dating from 1400 to 1700, are unique. Few similar churches exist in the world (i.e. Sumela in Turkey) but the ones in Bucovina are very well preserved and deserve a travel

Very ineresting for those who want to really know about Bucovina's monasteries! Built at the request of a great Moldavian leader, Anstasie Crimca, known for his wisdom and high education at the time (the 16-th century). It has a unique architectural style and it's now part of a great nuns orthodox monastery. Bets time to visit during the summetime.

Various types of old buildings - a church, blacksmith, mill, homes etc. - from around Bucovina were brought here to create a traditional Bucovinian village. We visited in September so there were no interpreters in any of the buildings but the storyboards outside each building were in Romanian and in English. The church alone makes the visit worthwhile. Had to pay extra to take any photos but it is a very small amount so I would advise not to be cheap and pay the photo charge. The village is located next to the Citadel and there is a restaurant adjacent and plenty of parking.

It is painted both inside and out. Church is a place of pilgrimage to the relics of St. John the New of Suceava. The monastery church was the place where the Metropolitan Cathedral and enthroned rulers of Moldavia. It is situated in the center of Suceava. Nearby you can visit the Fortress and Bucovina Village Museum.

We just returned from a wonderful 2 week trip to Romania and were fortunated to visit this museum and meet Letitia, the artist. We arrived at the museum just before closing and Letitia's mother was kind enough to stay over and give us a tour of this amazing collection of eggs from all over the world. She speaks Romanian but we were with our guide who interpreted for us. The eggs are displayed in glass cases in mainly one room. Letitia arrived just before we left and is very friendly and welcoming--we were treated as friends instead of tourists. Before leaving the Suceava area we returned to the museum and were able to see her doing a demonstration of her technique. We purchased several of her beautifully designed eggs which are well packed and survived the trip home in my suitcase. This is a unique and fascinating place to visit. Opened in 2008, IULIUS MALL Suceava revolutionized the local retail market by leveraging the cultural heritage of the region and developing a comprehensive mix of shopping, dining and entertainment. The elements of modern architecture and distinctive design, along with the complete range of brands it offers, make IULIUS MALL Suceava a top shopping and leisure destination. The mall comprises over 170 stores, the largest multiplex cinema in the north of the country (comprising 8 auditoriums), a food court with over 1,200 seats, a playground for children, Auchan hypermarket, Brico Depot, casino, seasonal skating rink, the largest bowling and billiards club in Suceava and 1,300 places parking facility, which recommend IULIUS MALL Suceava as a complex designed for the entire family. IULIUS MALL Suceava is defined by enthusiasm, diversity and modernism.
Although it is the only true mall in Suceava, it is dificult to get there because of traffic. The only things worth doing are eating, watching a movie and shopping from Auchan. Poor choice of brand shops....mostly the same products as in the Bazar across the street but higher prices.

In addition to four other painted monasteries our guide took us to Rasca because he knew one of the priests there. This is indeed a beautiful monastery in a beautiful location. We were able to witness preparations for an upcoming feastday--lots of cleaning and local women bringing flowers. There were no other tourists there--very peaceful.

This is a nice piece of music history, unfortunately maintenance suffers due to budget issues. But for those who like to hear more about Ciprian Porumbescu's life and composition, it is a nice place to visit, especially because same village with the museum there are located memorial house and Porumbescu's grave.
