Sremski Karlovci

Reviewed By Ann C - Thornton Cleveleys, United Kingdom

Walking along the small streets of this town was like taking a step back in time. There are some lovely old buildings and plenty of examples of the 'spying' windows - sort of box-like arrangements overlooking the streets in some of the houses - which enabled the locals to observe the comings and goings below without being seen themselves (seems to have been a common practice in Serbia and not just during the Communist regime. Well worth taking a stroll round before going on to visit the Kis winery to round off the trip.

This Cathedral is a magnificent building with icons galore. The icon art only appears in orthodox churches and very ancient catholic churches.
There are seats along to walls for the priests. The church attendees must stand during services.
The Cathedral is located close to the Danube River.

Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar Zivanovic

Reviewed By lobstaluva - Springfield, Massachusetts

Travel often entails numerous visits to museums, religious buildings, monuments, and other historical sites. This was something refreshingly different. As we walked on the Zivanovic family's land, we observed beautiful Gardens, attractive buildings, and everything meticulously maintained. We began at the beekeeping museum. One of the family members, a delightful young man, told the story of the beginnings of the family businesses back in the 1700s. The businesses are now in the seventh generation. The small museum housed family pictures, anatomical charts of bees, old smokers and other machines used to extract honey and melt beeswax. There were also models of beehives used over the past 200 years, from cone shaped ones to modern day boxes. One very special one was built in 1880 in the shape of a church that may have symbolized St Sava Orthodox Cathedral.
After the beekeeping museum we visited the family's 300 year old wine cellar, one of the oldest and biggest. It was like going down into a cave and was quite interesting. It was dark and wet, a bit slippery, so be careful. This was followed by a delightful honey and wine tasting experience. Three types of honey were provided and, if I recall correctly, seven kinds of wine. They are noted for their bermet, whose recipe has remained a secret for generations. We do know that 27 ingredients are added to the natural wine and that it was a favorite of the aristocracy of several countries. This was a very nice experience and we highly recommend it, but check to see if a reservation is best.

The Grammar School (Gymanzium)

Reviewed By SACALosAngeles - Los Angeles

The school is beautiful from the outside, but we were lucky that our guide, Grada, was able to get them to admit us to the interior while school was going on. One of the students came to be our guide. The interior is beautiful and she was extremely articulate in explaining both the history of the gymanzium as well as the education system as it is now in Serbia. Very interesting.

If you're visiting Sremski Karlovci, then you really have to visit this very important historical place. Namely, in this very building, the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699, concluding the Austro-Ottoman War of 1683–97. It's a very important historical moment, because from that time Ottoman empire finally retreaded itself from Central Europe, which basically marked the beginning of the empire's phase of decline.

Vinarija Kis

Reviewed By axs666 - Canberra, Australia

I visited this winery while tasting in the area. I rolled up and the winery is in their home, a woman was labeling bottles in the house. She spoke zero English. I mean none. I pantomimed tasting wine and she was gracious enough to pour me tastes of all their wines. Wine was decent and it was interesting trying to communicate with wine charades. Only go here if you are a hardcore wine tourist like me.
