Teatro Arthur Azevedo

It is said to be the second eldest in Brazil, opened in 1817. It's a nice looking theater on the inside, but it could be taken care of way better. It receives monthly a good comedy or play, but it is up to a schedule to be verified at your hotel.
Take care with streets surrounding the Theater for petty theft.

The Palace is really beautiful, seated by the bay. The sunset is the best time for pictures cause the waters at the bay are golden. I recommend the free guided visit: it lasts about 30min and it's totally worth it. The tour guide was really competent and kind and the rooms and furniture are really exquisite. The visits start at 3pm on weekends.

It is such a quite majestic palace, but not luxourious. Anyway, it plays important role in the city history and is charming. The background views (Atlantic Ocean, Saint Marcos Bay, parts of the city itself, the garden behind the bulding and some other old constructions around) make it a gorgeous place for photos.

We spent 1,5 hours inside and didn´t get very excited. They got some interesting stuffs from colonization time, but this kind of places do need good guides to make you feel the history on your skin. Unfortunately, that was not my case.. the guide was slow and didn´t pass the emotion through her speech.
You pay R$ 10,00 or R$ 5,00 if you´re a senior or student from community school.

Housed in a big colonial building with a large exhibit of the regalia and drums associated with the Afro-Brazilian religions found in Maranhāo. There are no signs to read so it you do not take the tour it is a quick run through three floors of costumes and drums. However, I took the tour which lasted an hour, and a very well informed young woman led me through each room explaining what I was looking at. She did not speak anything other than Portuguese however, so limited use for most people traveling in the area from outside Brazil.
