This garden/park is situated inside the most ancient part of Santarém. I go there now and then since my childhood and I can state that it's a place that underwent several changes over the years. From the castle there are only some walls remaining and even those aren't very old. However it's a graceful garden, with an amazing view over the Tagus riverbanks. In the Summer it's a great place to walk, play with the kids and eat some icecream. It has an interesting museum inside (with paid entrance).

Santarém is one of the oldest cities of Portugal and right at its Praça Sá da Bandeira, you'll find the Cathedral complex ("Sé de Santarém") and the magnificent "Museu Diocesano de Santarém". Visiting this beautiful museum is a must for all those that appreciate religious art. Its collections of paintings, sculptures and Portuguese tiles stand among the best ones in the Catholic world. Check the temporary Exhibitions, as well as the permanent collections. The museum is opened seven days a week, but is closed at noon time. Check the hours before going. Enjoy!

It is nice in the summer because it gets to hot in Santarém. However due to that fact, it it always very crowded, and noisy. The best time to go is in the morning because there are less people. The lifeguards are not very friendly, and often rude, specially if you send a child to ask for something. The pools are clean and the area around, specially where the umbrellas are, is well looked after.

Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Protected Areas The greatest riches of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park are hidden within its interior. This chalk massif is a paradise for speleologists who will be able to discover grottoes and ravines in its depths, with surprising rock formations that have been sculpted by water over time.

Formerly known as St. Stephen Church, it is now named as the Church of the Holy Miracle, visited by thousands of Catholic pilgrims each year. The main attraction of this shrine is a Eucharistic or Communion host, encased in a silver monstrance and placed on display atop the altar. It is said to be the same consecrated wafer, which a desperate wife took home - instead of consuming during communion. She believed that the host would help her gain back the affection of her unfaithful husband. The consecrated host started to bleed and the scared wife threw it inside a trunk in the house. Later that night, both husband and wife were awakened by a mysterious light coming from the trunk. This was followed by more miracles. After investigating, the Church recognized the miracle. Today, visitors can view this host from a passage way at the rear of the altar. The place is not far from Fatima and is about 4 miles away from Lisbon.

As you might already know, Portugal is famous for its fantastic tiles! At "Mercado Municipal de Santarém" you'll find 63 tile panels, perfect representatives of the Portuguese mastership in manufacturing the traditional blue and white tile panels, picturing scenes of Portugal's history, culture and legends! Awesome! Santarém's public market was inaugurated in 1930, on the same location of the old open-air farmer's market, and was totally renovated in 1988. Easily reachable at Santarém's downtown, take your time and stroll along the magnificent tile panels! Enjoy!

Recently reopened and renovated, this convent has a really nice cloister and the church being abandoned and deconsecrated for many years doesn't have much remaining though what is still there is quite nice to see. The church is another fine example of Gothic architecture, very common in this city. Entrance fee was 2€

The casa-museu is situated next to the Portas do sol. The owner (Pedro Canavarro) is very friendly/educated and shows you around the garden and his house. He is a retired historian, politician, has a degree in museology and museums conservation, lector in Japan and Lisboa, etc. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience. One of his ancestors was the Prime Minister of Portugal. He has an extensive knowledge about his huge collection that he likes to share with anyone who is interested. For us it was an unforgettable experience. Many thanks to Pedro Canavarro.
