One of the reviews under "Eglise saint-Jean-Port-Joli" is really about the wood sculpture museum named 'Musee des Anciens Canadiens' at 332 ave de Gaspe Ouest. It is easily the best museum of wood sculpture in an area full of wood working artisans, and probably the best in Quebec, giving a history of the art as well as many examples of wood sculpting in varioous forms. At the time we were there, an artist was in residence giving explanagtions and demonstrations. In addition, there is a wonderful shope of wood workings available for sale, and the friendly staff can provide answers to most questions on the work. We consider the best stop in Port-Joli to see wood working.

The most prestigious museum of woodcarvings in north America.Choosen by the public as the most beautiful attraction in the area Chaudieres-Appalaches in 2012 and by a jury was choosen for the samething in 2006,Center of interpretation on the woodcarving.More than 275 pieces of collection. Pieces lifesize:René Lévesque,P.E.Trudeau,Harry Potter,Félix Leclerc,Jean Beliveau, The Beattles and La Joconde (Mona Lisa),etc.and 20 reproductions of Norman Rockwell in woodcarving.
We had the most wonderful afternoon exploring the Musee de Anciens Canadiens in August! The sculpture museum was filled with beautiful carvings, sculptures and creations that took our breath away! We had the honor of talking with and watching one of the sculptors at work. We learned about the history of carving, and were so impressed by the art that continues to be created. The gift shop was awesome. The women working there, especially Roxanne who helped us, were very knowledgeable about the artists and merchandise. It was like seeing a second museum – with carvings, inlaid wood, driftwood art, birch bark flowers, etc. Definitely worth visiting!

Quite likely I've been tarnished by visiting the Lone Star Museum in Vanderpool, Texas one too many times. While the bikes presented are interesting, especially those connected with wartime service, its a bit of grab bag of classics, a lot of Honda's, a nice Norton, the usual tribute to Harley Davidson which I've always respected Harley engineers for their ability to build a two wheeled transport out of used tractor parts. Regardless, I respect anyone with a passion to restore bikes to their original condition. A word for the owner, what if, what if you offered to the public a chance to purchase one of these classics. I'll be you'll get a couple of serious offers each year. One more observation, while the Lone Star had a better variety, it does not compare to the presentation of some of the displays, VERY WELL DONE, Bravo!

If you are planning to spend even part of a day in the area make sure you drop into the visitor center. They have lots of information on what to see and will help direct you to the sights in the area. The person who helped me was knowledgeable, helpful and bilingual. Lots of maps and brochures for local and area sites are available. They also have very clean washrooms.

The restaurant serves traditional french canadian food. While Deserts were just average, the soup and main plates were very good. Service was polite and efficient. They also have a counter where you can buy the food to take home. It is only open during the summer though.

Bravo!
