Here you will find the ruins of the medieval Cathedral and the bishop's residence from the 13th Century on the beautiful Museum grounds on the outskirts of Hamar. The museum is comprised of archaeological Exhibitions, a botanical garden and an outdoor museum with about 60 buildings from around Hedemarken County. The Cathedral ruins are protected by a much-discussed protective structure in glass and steel, called the Hamar Dome, which is an attraction in itself. Open every day in summer season. Groups all year when booked in forehand.

We had a great family day here with two adults and two teenagers. There were lots of different routes to follow, everything from easy routes for 5/6 year olds to very advanced routes. Something for everyone. We took some lunch with us and there's a BBQ available if you want to use that. Would certainly recommend the main zip line, for an extra 50kr on your day pass it's certainly worth it. Came home nicely relaxed and tired after a long day out in the woods. Highly recommended.

Eiktunet

Reviewed By Jasmin260 - Sondre Land Municipality, Norway

I like this museum on top of the hill looking over Gjøvik. In winter and summer, any season really, it's relaxing, romantic and a great place to stop. I haven't lived very long in the Gjøvik-Land-Toten region, but I think Gjøvik is one of the prettiest towns on the Mjøsa. The more I discover of it, the more I feel at home. There are plenty of little places which have an amazing view of the Mjøsa. This is one of them. The area is very picturesque and from Eiktunet, you can definitely stop and admire.
Eiktunet is an outdoor culture and history museum. Basically, there are 33 original buildings taken from the local farms and region, and placed here. The museum is open all year, so you can walk around the park and buildings any time. It's only in summer though, when the buildings are open and activities take place. There are also burial mounds and archaeological artefacts that have been found here.
The cafe is open from June to August and serve waffles (Norwegian staple), cakes, coffee, tea, drinks and light snacks. The cafe building is also traditional, and very koselig inside and out.
There is a walking trail that leads up from Gjøvik centre and passes through and around Eiktunet, so you could make this a half day trip, or longer, if you were to go further (we walked down to Eiktunet from Landåsbygda, which is roughly 22 km away).
Not far away is Øverby and the surrounding cross country ski park, which is also used by runners, walkers and bikers in summer. All in all, a recommended place to visit if you want to see Gjøvik's nature, history and culture.
There are always people here, so you get the impression that the locals love it too.

The Proysen Cottage and Cotter's Farm was Proysen's childhood home. The Proysen Cottage dates back to the 1860s, and has been restored in recent years. Cowshed and barn have been rebuilt in their original style, and appear today as they did when Alf Proysen was born on July 23rd 1914.

A museum dedicated to Alf Prøysen, one of the most important Norwegian cultural personalities in the second half of the twentieth century, and he made significant contributions to literature, music, Television and radio. While the grounds are lovely I found the museum a bit lacking in information. However, the museum has an incredible cafe, I ate the reindeer stew which was so good!

There's information on the construction and the cost and thank goodness it's still in use and not another white elephant from the Olympics. From outside you would be completely unaware of its existence..!

Those who frequent railway museum around the world will find this one on the small side. It is very nicely arranged, with a central modern building on one side of the street and scattered sheds, old station buildings and a restaurant car along a short narrow rail in a very nice park setting along lake Mjøsa. The displays are well kept and clean with nice explanations, although if you speak only English you may loose some details in the translation.
There is a small train with a cute steam loco running from one end of the museum to the other,

Koigen

Reviewed By Gamernurse - Hamar, Norway

I'm often at Koigen in the summer hanging out with friends.
Koigen has everything;
a beach with an artificial islet, skate constructions, barbecue areas, a playground for kids, benches and tables a basket ball court and three sand volleyball courts! It's the perfect place to enjoy your day off in the summer. Koigen is also 150 meter from Hamar centrum, it's easy to access and there are lots of parking spots as well.
If you're going to Hamar, Koigen is the best place to relax and sunbath!
