Noumea, on the island of Grand Terre, is the capital of the French territory of New Caledonia. The peaceful port city has a diverse population and colorful European architecture, reflecting its colonial history. Having served as the headquarters of the US Army during WWII, the tropical shrubbery of Ouen Toro Mount is now under the protection of abandoned Naval guns. The Michel Corbasson Zoological and Forest Park offers visitors shaded walks amongst rare birds and views out over the lagoon.

The coverage of Perouse's travels, as well as 13 other seagoing captains is shown through wonderful artifacts and histories. The headphones allow you to hear of letters left for loved ones on ill fated ships. One lost ship had a skull brought to a lifelike rendering and it is so real it's beyond imagination. The ocean travel shows where inventiveness and necessity took an impact and improved the way for future explorers. At least ten shipwrecks are examined. Then there are the traditional finds, on board living items, useful tools of the trade. A miniature Amadee lighthouse. One humongous wood rudder from the fastest of ships the Roanoke. It discuses the trade and affect on the persons of New Caledonia, for the better and worse. At least 13 noteworthy explorers are given mention and brief bios which was good to see. The temporary exhibit on the top floor was a bit confusing.

A magnificent explanation of how WW2 was fort and affected this region, not only New Caledonia but New Zealand, Australia and other pacific Islands. The museum is well laid out and you are given an English audio machine on arrival which explains the exhibits as you go around, interesting.

An absolute must-see when in Noumea! This is world-class by any standards! We have seen fish here that we haven’t seen anywhere in the world. Where else, for example, can you see shark embryos moving inside their shells? The tanks were all spotlessly clean and the beautiful, delicate corals were testament to a very healthy environment. There is also an outside tank dedicated to large sea turtles, some of which have reached a very fine old age. There is also an area exclusively for deep sea fluorescent corals, which also looked very healthy, not to mention each of the other tanks, which all showcased the local fish life fantastically. Bravo Noumea for caring for your local sea creatures so well!

This place is great if you plan on kitesurfing or if you want to watch kitesurfing. Very windy and the far side of the island is full of kitesurfers (can get quite crowded). There is only one resort on the island (l’Escapade). The buffet lunch there is quite expensive 7000CHF and not really worth that price. You can bring your own packed lunch and picnic. Lots of people do that as the taxi boat to get over there is cheap. There is snorkeling gear to hire - there are turtles in the water but not much coral. You can also hire SUPs and little boats. The island is cute - takes 20 mins to walk around it, but you can probably get similar experience going somewhere closer such as duck island which is a stones throw from noumea.
Taxi Boats leave from Ansa Vata beach 1500CHF each person
Or the hotel boat leaves from Port Moselle about 4 times a day- included if you get the lunch package

Ran this track every morning and evening during my stay in Nouméa. An amazing environment with plenty of nice people. I was amazed at the number of people out walking, running, doing a boot camp at all hours. Definitely a safe place to run/jog.

So puzzled by some previous knocking critical reviews. Surely some people should not be surprised by cruise over pricing of tours or with the tiniest of research discover how to get there themselves. Complaints about overcrowding on a tiny island - well seriously? Or sneering that French speaking people don’t speak English?? Anyway - fabulous experience. Go early in good weather and not in crowds and you will see many turtles, manta rays and thousands of fish!! Quick taxi ride. Please just be polite and sensitive. Simple

This museum shows aspects of tribal life among the Polynesians in New Caledonia and beyond (Vanuatu, PNG etc.). We enjoyed seeing the reproduction houses and traditional dress items and learned about the local history and traditional culture.

On the narrow Tina Peninsula of approximately 8 hectares, given by the Noumea Council, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre was inaugurated in May 1998 and was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. The Centre is a place of identical assertiveness and cultural gathering and creation. Through its original configuration, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre offers a lot of cultural activities as you can find there an art centre, Exhibitions spaces, show areas and a specialized multimedia library. Depending on its activity, the audience changes quantitatively and sociologically. Transferred to New-Caledonia in 2012, newly named ADCK-CCT aims to search, collect and promote the kanak cultural heritage, to initiate and develop kanak artistic creation, to provoke the emergence of common cultural practices and references, to be a pole of regional and international exchanges The Tjibaou Cultural Centre recorded 98 405 visitors in 2011. It employs 65 persons.
Amazing architecture set amidst vast green compound by the bay. Provides a snapshop of the local Kanak culture & art. Exhibits could be improved, model houses (huts) are empty interior except for cooking place in one of them; could also be better with more interactive activities.

I am not a fan of zoos but this one mainly displaying indigenous birds is worth a visit. It has a great layout but beware it is quite hilly and can be challenging to walk. I was envious of the folks zooming around on their rental segways.
