The 10 Best Things to Do in Mykonos Town, Greece

October 3, 2017 Jasper Kershner

Classic whitewashed buildings line the labyrinthine streets of Mykonos, the largest town on the Greek island of the same name. Matoyianni Street is particularly charming. Iconic 16th-century windmills keep watch over the village from the hills above, and the fully functional Boni Mill is part of the Mykonos Agricultural Museum. The Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum will give you a proper introduction to the area’s rich cultural and economic history.

We went out this June privately with Mykonos Catamaran - for just myself, my husband and our 18 year old daughter. We chose the sunset sail - and were picked up by a private driver at our hotel at 3:15 PM and returned at about 9:00 PM. The catamaran is large and luxurious. We felt incredibly pampered.
We were taken to a beach on a small island, where we were able to get out and swim to shore. We also sailed closely by Delos, which was incredible and lovely. The only down side was that our crew had not been on Mykonos long - and they did not know much about the history of Delos - so they couldn't tell us much about the island or what we were looking at. I asked about a few sites and buildings that we could see from the catamaran - but they said they had no idea. Still, it was something to see, even from the water. I'm sure you could learn a lot by taking a tour of the island. However, I have also heard that it can be hot and dusty and without any shade - so seeing it from the water had it's perks as we drifted along in the cool sunset with a nice breeze. Should we return to Mykonos - I would do the same catamaran again - and I would also do the walking tour of Delos as I'm sure it's fascinating.
The two member crew could not have been nicer! They allowed us to determine where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do and if we wanted to swim or sail.
And the dinner, which was expertly cooked for us on the boat - was out of this world! We all loved everything. There was enough food for 20 people easily! So many different dishes to choose from! As I've stated in other reviews - we love the tomato balls/fritters in Greece! Just awesome. And the wine flowed. The sunset was gorgeous and we never felt more relaxed. As the sun set and the air became cool - the crew gave us blankets to snuggle up in. It was perfect...
I have to mention that we were celebrating our daughter's 18th birthday - and the crew supplied us with an incredible cake for her! They gave us a choice of chocolate or caramel cake. We chose the caramel - and it was a great choice. She loved it and was very surprised - especially when they put on a funny birthday song and brought out a crazy birthday hat for her to wear. It was hysterical and she laughed and blushed through it all.
They also had great music playing the whole cruise - just right!
It all made for such a special and unique and truly memorable evening! It was so much more memorable than simply sitting in yet another restaurant for dinner, especially considering we were in restaurants every day and night of our 11 day trip to Greece! This night was worth every penny and more! All 3 of us agreed that it was money well spent and we would do it all the same way again!
We could have saved money and gone out as part of a shared group. However, we've done private boats and shared in the past. And the two experiences are very different. The group can be fun. But we loved having the catamaran to ourselves... It's really a very special experience being out on the water with just your family or friends - and sometimes that difference can turn a "fun" experience - into an "unforgettable" experience...
The best part for my daughter, who is a sailor, is that she was allowed to steer the vessel for quite a bit of the sail coming in. She has such amazing memories from doing that. When else would she have an opportunity to actually sail a giant catamaran around the Greek Islands, steering it all on her own, Greek music softly playing in the background? The photos we have of her at the wheel - she is absolutely glowing - and it isn't just the sunset!
I can still close my eyes and feel the sunset as we sailed along the water and took in Mykonos and its surrounding Islands. It's such a different experience than you would ever get by staying on the land.
We can't thank Mykonos Catamaran enough for being a highlight of our trip - and possibly our favorite day and memory in all of our trip to Greece. We experienced some wonderful days and nights in Greece - so the bar is set high. But our daughter would tell you, hands down, that this was the pinnacle of our entire trip! And I speak for all of us when I sum it up with one word: Magical.

Rarity Gallery

Reviewed By Janly

Because of trip advisor reviews, my friend and I sought out this gallery. Because of the small winding streets in Mykonos, this may not be easy to find, so if you wish to go, plot out the location on a map before you head out. Lovely little art gallery with some of the most interesting, original sculpture I have ever seen.. Definitely worth it for a stop in to cool off from the hot sun and to take a bit of time enjoying some beautiful art. The owners were more than willing to teach visitors about the art and artists and they have taken time to provide a bit of a description next to each piece about the artist. Wish I had a home and wallet big enough to to take a piece home.

We had a half day with Nicholas and Claudia and we had a ball!
The communication from the initial booking right up until we arrived was first class.
We sailed along the coast and got a real look at the Beaches and coastline that you don't always see and in perfect weather conditions! I am not a great sailor but the trip was as smooth as silk and I never felt uneasy! Everything had been thought of from the delightful food, wine and other refreshments they served - even suncreams were provided in case you have forgotten your own and a spritzer to cool you down! During the trip we were able to talk to Nicholas and Claudia a little about the island and learn more about Mykonos- they were friendly but not intrusive - perfect.
At the end we were able to stop offshore from Kalo Livadi and go off the boat for a swim whilst being served beautiful fresh fruit. What more could you ask? We had a great time - thank you!

This semi-private beach offers typical deck chair rental services by the accompanying resaurants/hotels. The actual beach here is beautiful and safe and very picturesque. Anyone can swim here although beach space is limited as most is used up by deck chairs and beach umbrellas.

Agios Sostis Beach

Unorganized & natural (no chairs or umbrellas), nice quiet beach on North side of island, away from crowds, opposite vibe to South shore Beaches, partially-enclosed beach faces East so is protected from ocean current and wind, large sand beach, some rocks, great bay for kayak and stand-up paddle board, no music, water bottles and snacks (large glazed donuts) sold there by locals, bring your own food & drink supplies as needed, popular beach for nudity, water is fantastic (blue, cool & clear), good for snorkeling although didn’t see many fish, parking can be difficult as you park on extremely narrow streets nearby or the 2-lane street high up on the hill over the beach, the drive to the beach is quite amazing with view of large bay and surrounding hills, near ocean to the North, secret Tavern located nearby (although it’s seasonal like the island), one of our favorite Beaches on Mykonos, so peaceful & majestic there, a must-do activity if you have the time and the transport.

In the morning, you can watch Gioras baking using the wood oven.
The owners are extremely nice and welcoming.

Lovely beach, check out the prices of the beach chairs outside each restaurant because they do vary in price. We chose ones which were free provided you purchased a drink. The waiters did not badger us to buy more and it was very easy to call them over whenever you wanted serving. Most restaurants/bars offer lovely club sandwiches, great with beer or orange juice !

Charming and cute. Wonderful little village on the hillside. Stuffed with little shops and seaside restaurants and great Greek food. Its the kind of place you think..."I could live here". The people are charming , friendly and welcoming. Everyone should visit Mykonos. Go in off season tho', otherwise it is very crowded.
