Although we have been to this temple several times, it is always pretty and seems to change with the seasons. Be sure to explore the hill behind the temple with a small shrine filled with tanuki, or "racoon dogs" and the somber crypt with Kannon statues dedicated to lost children. The garden is especially lovely in the spring.

I didnt know either artist, but I found Genchiro Inokuma very varied and it was interesting to see the differences in his works - the way his paintings evolved.
Ohtake's exhibition was awesome- crazy, insane, colorful, all over the place. Loved it, an awesome contemporary artist. Its up until November 2013- worth it if you are in the area!
the building itself, the entrance is also cool.

First of all, the real name of the garden is Nakazu Bansho Park named after a framed calligraphy "Banshoen" which means "all things in the Universe" which this garden is said to possess.
The garden is ornamented by natural pine trees growing on the white sand and an artificial scenery of Lake Biwa which has eight Islands (see picture). They are connected by Bridges to make a route to go around the garden.
The entrance fee seemed a bit expensive (1000yen) but we really liked the walk and therefore recommend to visit it.

We arrived early to visit Kotohira. The long climb begins with a walk through town passing the tourist/pilgrim shops and restaurants. We were so early - to beat the tourists and the heat - that the shops were closed. For us, that was just fine - for others, they may prefer to shop and therefore could visit after the climb down. (We avoided the shops entirely on the way down but going through the Gardens and side paths)
