Musee des Ursulines

This is a small museum--and we all should support these small museums, right? It has some Paleolithic history, archaeological, agricultural, wine (of course), a really interesting gallery dedicated to rowing, and French, Flemish, Dutch paintings and sculptures from the 16-18th century, and a small gallery of contemporary art. The lack of any English wasn't a big problem given the context of the artifacts, old photos and one's imagination.

This is a super chateau for a wine tasting. The chateau has been in the same family since the early 19th century. The wines are very good and our host, Jacky, was a superb and enthusiastic presenter. If you enjoy degustations, you should also try the Chateau de Fuisse, only 3 kilometers away.

Eglise Saint-Pierre

This church was constructed in the 19th century and is pretty much in the centre of Macon and very close to the tourist information centre. The twin towers are very imposing at 53 metres high. Inside is a very large space with columns and arches and the architecture is excellent. This overlooks a large square area with restaurants and is a good place to have a coffee. The church has recently been renovated. Infact macon is going through major rejuvenation. Good souvenirs in tourist office next door.

Saint Laurent Bridge

Reviewed By Dietger H - Hope

Whenever I visit Macon I walk the St.Laurent Bridge for memories sake.
The Saone and bridge separate the Bresse region from the Maconnais. In the fifties older people referred to the Saone left as to the Empire and to the Saone right as to the Royaume
The Empire was the Holy Roman Empire of the Teutonic Nation, the Royaume the French Kingdom.
Nowadays the Bresse is known for its famous poultry and its dishes a-la-creme.
The Maconnais is known for its famous wines and South Burgundy food.
Prior to the construction of a Saone by-pass channel ships could not pass the bridge at high water. The up-stream vessels anchored in front of my flat (1959/60). D.F,H.H.

Musee Lamartine

Reviewed By Professeur_Avenarius - Metz, France

We have visited this tasting and selling point for the Wine Cooperative of the area. The place is very well kept (avoid getting there between 12:00 and 14:00 as they are on a lunch break) and the personnel very helpful. Their produce, is quite impressive from your diffused Macon Villages (we found it crispy and fresh) to your essential Pouilly-Fuisse (the great cru of the area, with depth and complexity that is breathtaking, to some more humble reds that are nothing special. All can be tasted in a relaxed way and what you buy comes at very friendly, in some cases exceptionally good prices. Definitely worth the visit, if you are a wine person

Eglise Cathedrale Saint-Vincent

Reviewed By DanishTravelor - Copenhagen, Denmark
