We had picked 3 caves to go too, and this was one of them. We weren't disappointed. They allow only a limited number of people to visit at a time, but well worth it. You purchase your tickets at Font de Gaume and then it is just a few kilometers away. Amazing cave paintings to see. Highly recommend.

The caves at Font de Gaume are unique in that people are still allowed to see the cave drawings made by people 15,000 years ago--although they severely limit the number who can see it each day. For that reason if you plan ahead the best approach is to get tickets online in advance. However, each day they reserve spots for 52 people who get in line. We were there on a rainy late October morning (past the major tourist season) and we got in line at 8:45 for a 9:30 ticket office opening and we were numbers 39,40 and 41. That's an example that you will need to get there early if it's a busier time. And one should ask for the English tour if possible.
It is an astounding experience to see those drawings and to see that some make use of perspective (which wasn't used in other art until the Renaissance) and of the natural contours of the rock. In fact the term Cro-Magnon is from this area--"Cro", an Occitanie word meaning "of" or "belonging to" and Magnon is the name of the family on whose land the skeletons of these peoples were first found.

We weren't sure if we'd enjoy going to a castle ruins, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. It's interesting to be able to wander around every part of the castle. They've reconstructed a small part of it so we could climb up into the tower and get a view of the ruins. Since the castle was built on prehistoric troglodyte caves, you can also walk into one of them and get an idea of how people lived thousands of years ago. Overall, a very cool experience.

There are two separate sites: the cave and the pre-history site. You can do just one or both with a combined ticket. We did both. We started with the cave, which was not large, but had some amazing features. Tour was mainly in French, but...MoreThank you very much. We're glad you enjoyed your visit.

Kids loved learning about the historic way of living. Yes the mannequins need a bit of updating but kids didn't seem bothered. Got a given a guide book in English which was great as all signs in French. Walking through the caves was the highlight. Worth it if your in the area but don't go out of your way to visit.

Musee National de Prehistoire

The temporary exhibit of "Le Troisième Homme" brought us to the museum as we took advantage of the free entrances given on the first Sunday of each month. Our daughter is an archeologist and has amply educated (brain-washed) her young children and us, on prehistory. Needless to say we lingered over the many displays of the flint tools, the bones, the megaceros etc. We were awed by the skill and technology of our prehistoric ancestors and the information about their lives gleaned by scientists from the artifacts they left. What is also amazing about this museum is its architecture. Enormous panels of rock seamlessly blended with the geometry of modern design as well as with the medieval vestiges. A fabulous view is offered by the Terrace under the cliff. We can never get tired visiting this museum. P.S. The staff is very friendly, pleasant and helpful.

Abri de Cap Blanc

This Prehistoric cave from the Magdalenian era lies just a few kilometres east of Les Eyzies on the right bank of the Beune river. It was classified as a listed site in 1926 in recognition of its unique sculptures. The frieze covers all but two metres of the 15-metre deep cave and features horses, bison and deer, some of which overlap. Originally, the sculptures were probably coloured since traces of ochre pigment were found during earlier archaeological digs. The remarkable depth and vibrancy of these sculptures carved with flint tools make the Cap-Blanc Cave one of the greatest masterpieces of Prehistoric art from the Upper Palaeolithic period. A museographical area around the friezes gives an overview of Cap-Blanc life and art. Cave of the Vézère valley designated world heritage site by UNESCO. Open: > All the year with prior reservation. > Low season: to visit the cave, contact the reception centre at the Font-de-Gaume cave in Les Eyzies. > High season from 15th May to 15th September: reception on the site from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last visit at 5 p.m.). Closed: > Saturdays. > 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th November and 25th December. The opportunity to see these reliefs/ sculptures in person is amazing and truly unique; a once in a lifetime moment for most of us. The guide was extremely enthusiastic, knowledgeable and funny. she is bilingual with english but due to time constraints in the overhang area she speaks in French and gives cards with the fundamental information in English.
Depending on interest level of group the time in the shelter can be long - she is very willing to answer every question.
Her French is very fast and even for those who speak some French you are wise to get an english card as some of her talk is hard to understand.
worth the effort to go.

The first thing Herbert did was get us all prepped and mounted up. We are all beginners at horse riding but felt so safe and sure under Herbert's guidance and tutelage. Our 6 year old was on one of the biggest horses but was guided superbly by Herbert and nearly fell asleep up there. We were all left elated after 2 hours riding through rivers and through Valleys and fields. We totally relaxed and immersed ourselves in the magical landscape and prehistoric surroundings. Herbert's great communicating in French, English and German and kept all horses and riders safely in line. Isabelle's cold water and warm greetings back were a lovely end to a great morning. We would highly recommend booking with Herbert and Isabelle.

Abri Pataud

Reviewed By SylviaKath - Brussels, Belgium

This prehistoric site and its museum should not be missed. The guide was so inspiring that the visit lasted rather longer than the announced 15 min or so, and we came out feeling we had had a real experience. Don't miss the little museum which you can visit after seeing the Abri itself.
I had stepped into the tourist office, saying that we had just half a day, and what should we see? ... the lady at the desk suggested the Musee de la Prehistoire and the Abri Pataud. These two destinations easily filled a couple of hours, and a bit more, and we emerged very pleased with this recommendation.
In particular, the guide at the Abri Pataud was really inspiring in his commentary, and made us travel back through the centuries, and think about how our ancestors lived. (We followed the visit in French, but he speaks English too.)
I felt that the Abri Pataud was the most interesting visit we had made in the Perigord region.
If you are in Les Eyzies, don't miss this place - it is only 5 minutes walk down the street from the Tourist Office, and I'm sure you will have an unforgettable visit.
By the way, there are lots of parking places (paying), and cafes where you can have a quick meal, and the parking attendants were kind enough to overlook our slight overstay ...
