We made a visit to Kareigawa Station by taking Express JR train ‘Hayato-no-Kaze’, running only twice a day. This wooden station was a heritage from 1903.The train had a 5 minute brief stop here allowing passengers to rush off for photo shooting. Antique remnants were displayed inside the station. Bento made with local harvest would be available for sale on weekend if you could catch it. Remember to get back the train on time, or you would become part of the tourist scene in this historical architecture. During the train ride, explosive Sakurajima emitting grey cloud of volcano ashes into sky could be well seen in good weather.

Kirishima is a crossroads for commerce between Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures. And Kirishima Shrine is the most famous attraction in Kirishima. Although I went there by taking bus from Kirishima Jingu station, I did also find that there is bus from Kokubu.

It is a nice place to kill your time, while you are waiting for your flight. If you are a plane lover, you can also visit a museum on the 3rd floor, where you can learn about the history of Kagoshima Airport. The entrance is free.

The advantage of taking a taxi (or driving yourself) is that you can stop and admire the waterfall. On the road from the station to the Kirishima Spa Resort. Additionally if has been raining you will get an opportunity of seeing a good flow of water which makes a good picture opportunity.

This is a small shrine in Hayato-cho. The area is not that small. But, there is a driveway until the parking lot and the real shrine starts from there. I liked to see huge trees. And there's nothing much to see.

I expected it to be a fairly leisurely walk up to Unami Pond (as judging from the map it was not far away) but it actually took a good 40 minutes of constant uphill walking to get to the pond!
Don't get me wrong, it's not tough for novices but it's not "flip flop and handbag" walking. The pond itself is lovely, you can also walk around the crater but we didn't do that.
Walk down takes about 20 minutes. Nice to see if you're driving past and have some time to kill (but not something to make a detour to go see).

The park is excellent. There is a little train which goes upstairs which can enjoy the fantastic view of Kagoshima and the endless sky. After that you can go up via the cable cars, and go down with the slides! You can control the speed of the slide and it is so enjoyable to play it!!

While you get to know the traditional ways of making black vinegar, take some good photos of rows of black vinegar pots lying on a vast grass field, taste and buy some vinegar products, it's a 40-min drive from the Kirishima Shrine.

This is a small free exhibition hall covering aviation materials.
Sora in Japanese means a sky.
The location is 3F of domestic terminal.
Visitors can experience several activities, too.
Starting from the international terminal was a bit confusing with few signs.
Observation Deck is right outside. Nice to visit together.
