Whisky tours with a local!

Reviewed By tony_lunn - Galashiels, United Kingdom

A very informative and well organised tour. Michelle was fantastic during the tour and beforehand giving me some excellent guidance on accommodation and eating out in the area. We took advantage of the whisky meal she organised, which was splendid. If you like your whisky, there was a varied selection of samples given during the walk, with lots of background about the distillers and the whisky.

Speyside Cooperage

Speyside Cooperage was the first stop on our whisky tour with Speyside Whisky Tours. We arrived right at opening so we ended up with a private tour. It was really fascinating to watch the coopers at work and to learn about the unique skills required to build and repair the barrels. Even if you're not into whisky, it's very cool to see such an ancient art still in use and highly valued.

Aberlour Distillery

Steeped in centuries of legend and surrounded by the dramatic Highland scenery of Ben Rinnes, the village of Aberlour lies at the very heart of Speyside, where the Lour burn joins the River Spey. The exceptionally pure, soft spring water used for making Aberlour whisky is drawn from nearby natural Springs. In this special place, the resources of nature and the founder’s passion for making the best single malt combine to make the generously multi-layered whiskies of Aberlour.

We have seen more than 40 Distilleries but we must say this was the not in our top but more at the bottom. Let we start to tell that the whisky is very good so that’s not the problem. Also the tasting at the end of the tour is good. Wat was not good; we didn’t feel wanted customers. Us was not told what to do or not but more commanded. It was the tone what wasn’t nice. We couldn’t make any pictures inside. This isn’t allowed at more Distilleries but the reason was safety of flammable gases (alcohol). This was a very strange reason because we see open electricity boxes where more change of spark was then all the camera’s together. Beside that there were al kind of electrical things on the desk with not any security for sparks. For example, a little air vent was on a table and this gives much electrical sparks. Again, it was the tone it was told us. During the tour we asked a worker who was sitting at a computer some things what we see, like a temperature on the display. Also this was not appreciated. Sorry but we fled not wanted. We would buy some things in the shop but went away after the tasting, very disappointed. Specially because we had booked the tour some months before and hoped to get something better.

This distillery is, as I can recall, the only one in Scotland that remains in the family since its foundation. So you can learn there how is keeping a distillery through the years, how the business evolved... And taste a different and non-very commercial whisky. My personal choice is the 10 years old, not so strong as the 15th o others.

Very kind and accommodating guides take you through this spotless distillery and they are more than happy to answer your questions. Wonderful tasting offered afterward...not rushed and very relaxed. No pressure to buy. Gorgeous Gardens and very scenic surroundings. Went with no expectations, but left very pleased and happy. I recommend this distillery!

The Balvenie Distillery

Reviewed By WestCoastJohn&Jane - Vancouver

We were on a 2 week tour of Scotland and included 5 distillery tours. This was by far the best. Because the tours are very limited, we had to actually plan our trip around the dates available for a tour at Balvenie (one of our favourite Whisky) - even booking the tour 3 months ahead of time! Charlie was our guide and he was phenomenal - knowledgable and very personable - of course the small size of only 7 people meant an intimate experience lasting about 3 hours. Unique to the Balvenie tour is seeing the actual malting process and the cooperage facility - few of the other distillery tours offer the experience of seeing either. Finally, although an extra charge, filling your own bottle directly from an old cask is a thrill and memento to take home. Overall, despite the GBP 40 charge, it is an experience of a lifetime.

We took the explorer tour and really enjoyed ourselves. We learnt how whisky was made and the guide was friendly and knowledgeable. At the end we got to taste some of the whiskeys and it was really good that they had miniatures to give the drivers so that they could taste them later.

We visited the Fiddichside Inn on recommendation from our B&B owner and are glad that we did.
The pub hasn't changed in years - it's like going back 40 years or so.
Joe, the landlord has been there for something like 57 years.
Don't expect anything modern - just enjoy the drink, the company and the atmosphere.
