There are many Jewish quarters all over Europe but not many from the middle age and none from this period so well preserved as this one. One should also underline the role of the municipality considering the promotion and preservation of the Jewish buildings like the Synagogue and the Fountain. Enjoy!

This is a fantastic medieval ruin that is very accessible and entirely free. You can climb all the way to the top and get tremendous views. There are some annoying flying earwigs up at the highest tower so watch out for those. If you love Castles this is a must. There is also an Inquisition display and a small free museum about the Medieval days of the area as well as the megalithic sites that tend to be throughout the Alentejo and down around Evora. It's a steep climb by so worth it.

This beautiful Fountains, in Castelo de Vide (Alentejo, Portugal) , was built in the XVI Century, and it is situated in one of the many narrow streets of Castelo de Vide, nof far from another place of interest. the Judiaria (Jewish quarter ), where the Jews should live, because Christian authorities wished to segregate Jews from the Christian population.

This very old Synagogue has been transformed into a small museum.
The museum includes the original two-rooms Synagogue, one for men and one for women, and other small rooms with a collection of Jewish artifacts from around Portugal.
All of the information is written in Portuguese.
Free entrance!!
So if you are in the area, i highly recommend to visit this village: the old Synagogue, the beautiful streets of the Jewish quarter (Judiaria) and the castle.
This picturesque village is full of beautiful views, specially from the castle (just above the Synagogue, 2 minutes walk)..
Take a careful look at the houses in the Jewish quarter.. on the ground floor, on the right doorpost, there are small indents where once were Jewish "mezuzot".

Castelo De Vide is one of my all time favorite towns we stopped in while in Portugal recently. Such charm. I felt compelled to climb the very steep and narrow streets to see this old castle. It is so sad it is not being maintained. But it was still mesmerizing to walk up the stairs and go inside and just imagine. It is basically a shell at this point, but you can see remnants of the interior walls, and old well, some awesome old relics. My Husband had the camera and did not climb with me, so NO PICS regretfully.

This is a typical small town church. Not extremely special, but if you are passing by peek inside to get a feel of this church.
