Grand Terre: Poe Beach and Roche Percee

Poe Beach was very quiet, nothing open or happening. The beach looks nice and the lagoon fairly sheltered for water sports - you need to bring your own gear though. Roche Percee and the 3 bays walk is worth the effort, although nothing spectacular.

We made our original booking through their website but we were actually staying at the Sheraton Resort so we could have also made it there at Reception.
PLEASE NOTE: Their website does say there are two locations (Poe Beach and the Sheraton) for the tour so just make sure you check your booking as to where you have to be. We initially thought it was one boat that left Poe beach and stopped at the Sheraton but there are actually two separate boats. This was our mistake as we should've headed to Poe beach but they were very nice about us changing boats when we were scheduled.
The tour is great, the guide was really friendly and spoke everything twice in both french and english as we were the only other ones that didn't speak french on the boat. You are taken out over the lagoon with stops here and there depending on what you might see - for us, it was a giant turtle! It was amazing. It takes about 15-20 mins to get to the area of the lagoon to snorkel.
You are given a good amount of time to snorkel and equipment is provided (fins, masks etc) They have informative booklets that are waterproof as well that you can take with you in the water if you want to search for particular sea life. There are marked buoys as well which you can stop at if you are not a particularly strong swimmer, as well as a raft. It is 2500 F per adult and I would suggest heading out early.
Amazing turquoise, clear water so make sure you have an underwater camera! I definitely recommend.

This is a great little museum- reasonably priced but full of interesting facts about live in Bourail since before Europeans arrived. Real guillotine in the corner was scary and really makes you shudder about this horrific method of capital punishmen - last time used in1940. Interesting stories of live as convicts and live as a woman in those times not very pleasant.

I've never tried any of the type of liquors and eaux de vie that are made there but the place is really nice and improving its front door for visitors. We were led by Max to a little tasting room at the back displaying all the different products, including essential oils with each different properties. The taste are very "local" with herbs and flowers from the island used to infuse the oil and the alcohol.
We were in the hunt of local "rhum agricole" which doesn't exist in New Caledonia (yet?). We were very pleasantly surprise by the taste of all the products made on site.

This Pete Dye course is an absolute delight to play. The hillside surrounds offer stunning outlooks from most holes on the course as the track winds it’s way through native bushland. Not a hilly course, but still enough undulation to make it interesting. The layout is a good one with a lot of risk and reward holes to keep golfers of all levels thinking. The usually wide fairways allow one to be a little loose off the tee, but most shots into the greens will test the very best of golfers.
“Senior” golfers will probably benefit from the use of a golf cart, although those players with a good level of fitness will enjoy the walk.
We played the course in all conditions from 30 mph coastal winds, hot sunny days and rain soaked balmy days. Yes that’s right, rainy days. This course is good enough to entice one out for a hit even in questionable weather.
The greens do take to a little getting used to. Like a lot of tropical and hot weather courses they have laid grass that is a lot broader than bent so the ball has the feeling of rolling through the grass rather than on top of it, which can make for slow rolling, but as said after a round or two you will get used to it and start rolling them in.
Situated on the west coast, around tow hours easy drive from Noumea, this course is worth a visit for keen golfers of any level, although those with little experience or nagging slice issues should bring plenty of ammo. There are no land snakes on the island so it’s ok to venture into the scrub for lost balls and you may also experience herds of deer and Turkey packs rambling about.
None of our group has played the Natadola course in Fiji yet, so to us, this track is the best in the South Pacific, and when you consider the differences in service from Fiji to New Caledonia (Fiji minimal, New Caledonia excellent) golfers should consider this as a great option as it also comes with great French Island culture, cuisine and wine. A must do.
