Strontian (/strɒnˈtiːən/; Scottish Gaelic: Sròn an t-Sìthein) is the main village in Sunart, an area in western Lochaber, Highland, Scotland, on the A861 road. Prior to 1975 it was part of Argyllshire. It lies on the north shore of Loch Sunart, close to the head of the loch. In the hills to the north of Strontian lead was mined in the 18th century and in these mines the mineral strontianite was discovered, from which the element strontium was first isolated.

Read a few negative reviews and was a bit apprehensive but glad we went on "gut instinct". Service by Katie and her son was first class as was the food. Choice of vegetables supplied with meal was excellent, rather than the "standard" carrots supplied by the majority, we also had garden peas, asparagus, spinach, leek and of course baby potatoes and carrots. This was served with roast lamb which was succulent and tender and also a venison casserole which was strong and flavoursome. Our starters consisted of a Pea Soup ( which was sublime and I don't really go for pea soup) and black pudding with Apple and chutney , both served with home made fresh bread. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal that we intend eating there for dinner tomorrow.

Very good place : small diner room but with fantastic views on the Loch. The meals are classical and well cooked, and the restaurant make the effort to offer vegetarian plate which are delicious (interesting when you are a little bit fed up with the haddock and the scallops...)
Service is very kind and attentive.
Good wine list.
Without doubt a place to be for dinner. And perhaps you could see the otter or the eagle passing on the Loch when the sun goes down...

The Boathouse Restaurant is located on the picturesque Kingairloch Estate, about an hour's drive from Fort William. Menus feature produce grown in the estate's walled garden, seafood from local waters and wild venison from the surrounding Mountains. It is a perfect place for visiting yachts in the area as there are free moorings. It is advisable to book ahead as the restaurant is an intimate dining experience. Open seasonally, so check opening times.
We used to come here quite often and take one of their moorings. The meals, although not always cheap, were reliably good. No More! The menu is more like that of a cafe although they have kept the prices very high for what they are offering.
When we booked they tried to make us take an earlier table (presumably because they wanted to get home early) hinting that they would be full. Of course there were only two or three other tables occupied.
Such a disappointment - we wont' be going again.

Stopped at Strontian for fuel so decided to have a coffee and cake. Unusually for the region the lady that served wasn't overly friendly. My carrot cake was over refrigerated, the filling and topping could have done with an hour at room temperature and the...MoreSo sorry you were not happy..we have noted your comments

The site is magic, with fabulous view on the Loch...
First deception : you enter in the dinner room. It's small and with too many tables. There is only a small window with view on the Loch, the other tables are near the wall.
Service very attentive, smiling and profesional, as you can wait in a restaurant of this category.
A starter was clearly outstanding : Crab cake with wasabi and apple sorbet, and an other very good: mussels with creamy sauce.
And the mains arrived. So disappointing...
The haddock main and a cod main were not really different from those you could eat in every good bistrot or small restaurant on the road, except for the decoration. It was drab and flavourless.
We didn't take any dessert after such a defeat.
A good selected whisky at the end (slightly overpriced) couldn't compensate this big disappointment.

We booked accommodation in Appin and did a search on Tripadvisor for local eateries. I read the glowing reviews about the Old Inn and thought there must be a catch. Well, having been there I can honestly say there isn't. I love steak. We have travelled a fair bit, nationally and internationally and my food of choice is generally steak. I have eaten in some very fine steakhouses. I like to think I know a good steak when I eat one. I had a sirloin at the Old Inn. Without a doubt it is the best steak to ever enter my digestive system. It was a perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth, full of flavour plate of wonder. I was sad when the final piece went in. My wife tried the hake. Equally delicious although the steak won in my humble opinion. My only negative is the fact that it's a 5 hour drive away! My mouth is watering just writing this review. Can't wait to return.
