Laobian Dumpling (Zhongjie)

Reviewed By Jedai79 - Singapore

Patronised Lao Bian Dumpling Restaurant (老边饺子馆 Lao Bian Jiaozi Guan ) on 16 May. Restaurant's history dates back to 1808 (please see our photos).
Every dish was tasty and the fried dumpling's presentation (look) scored high (冰花煎饺卖相极佳). If service is less important than the quality of food, this is a MUST try in Shenyang. Dumpling-wise, Oriental Dumpling Restaurant (东方饺子王 Dongfang Jiaozi Wang)in Harbin and Changchun (plse see our review) which was already good; Lao Bian's (老边)dumplings were even better. Generally, food was better than Li Lian Gui Smoked Meat Restaurant (李连贵熏肉大饼 Li Lian Gui Xun Rou Da Bing)in Shenyang too (plse see our review).
Location :
Very good , very convenient. Catch a train (metro) to Middle Street (中街Zhong Jie) Station, exit from Exit B and Lao Bian will be on your left. We walked here from Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫 Shenyang Gu Gong)which took us 20-25 mins. It was ok because we wouldn't have seen Middle Street (中街)if we hadn't walk from Palace to Lao Bian Dumpling Restaurant.
Food :
Very delicious. We had 百年煸馅, (Dumplings, 饺子Jiaozi), 冰花煎饺. (Fried Dumplings that were linked together to form a flower) and 菠萝咕咾肉 (Sweet and Sour Pork Fritters with pineapples). The latter is a well-known dish in Singapore Chinese restaurants, but Lao Bian's Pork Fritters were even nicer.
Service :
Not good, even the locals were unhappy.
1. Waiter pestered us to order a jug of soya bean drink (豆浆). We had two huge bowls of hot soya bean drink at 永和豆浆 (Yonghe Doujiang) at Changchun Railway Station that morning. Ordered such huge bowls as we did not know small in China meant big in Singapore where quantity was concerned, thus big in China became quantity for two in Singapore. So we did not want to drink that again as both of us drank quantity meant for 4 people that morning and had wanted to keep my tummy space for food instead. After all the pestering, we said we would order 1/2 jug which was listed in the menu, he insisted that we should get a full jug for two, if memory did not fail us, that full jug cost approximately S$10 (can't remember exact price in RMB). Cost was not an issue if we really wanted to drink it but why should we order something that we did not want to drink again just to please the waiter? In the end, we just ordered coke which I think he wasn't happy. When we tried to ask for help later, he was always looking away.
2. A few times, we tried to get the attention of the two waiters on duty, they would cleverly looked elsewhere and one of them was the one described in 1).
3. The locals had wanted to place order with the waiter who pestered us to order soya bean drink but he was busy answering a call on his handphone. Huh? That was the first time we saw a waiter able to do that while working. Then, the local lady raised her voice , "服务员!" (Waiter!) to catch the attention of another waiter who was the one of the two waiters who looked away when we had wanted to ask him for something.
4. After high-end Modern Coffee and Restaurant at Harbin (restaurant with super bad service and bad food that charged us almost RMB400 for two-please read our review), Lao Bian's service should "win" First Runner Up place during our 15D trip in China.
Cost : ¥109
Rating :
Chefs have done a fantastic job, to give it lower than a 4-circle rating just because of poor service will not do justice to the team of competent chefs.
Will we come again?
A definite "YES"!

Food was good, and the decor was filled with old stuff from the Qing dynasty. There is a similar outlet in Beijing, but I cannot remember the name...also has same decor and food...but, this one is much better. We were a party of four...was given a small table as it was very crowded..half way thru, we were given a bigger table...but, this after we complained that the table was not big enough to hold all our dishes...the staff really did not care...great food, but, be prepared for bad service.

I know that western food in China is not a common thing, so I am willing to pay a higher price, however, these prices are ridiculous, and the food is very disappointing. I'd rather stay home and cook than return to this place. I think its popular for the fellas to drink and eat in the evening, and I hear it can be fun, but definitely don't go here expecting a nice meal.

Are you kidding me guys? This is a "cheap and average" place? This is one of the best restaurants I've eaten ok?! Located in Joy City near Shen He district, it was certainly one of my favourite places with all of the great classic Dong Bei meals I've had! Da Xia, Shui Zhu Yu, Niu, and Guo Bao Rou are all common things you can order and eat!

First of all, this is a BAKERY, NOT A RESTAURANT! You can find Xia Bu Xia Bu however on the upper floor of Holiland. This is my MOST BELOVED AND FAVOURITE BAKERY EVER BECAUSE IT OFFERS UP TO 200 DIFFERENT STYLES OF CAKES TO CHOOSE FROM!!!))) Moreover, you can also expect to eat Zong Zi for Dragon boat festival, Moon cakes for Autumn festival, and Yuan Xiao, today, 11 Feb, two weeks after the Chinese New Year!! Very good to have and buy your cake! Ranging from 100 to 1000 yuan, depending on how you like it.

Haidilao Hot Pot (Chao Hui Dian Shenyang No.1)

Reviewed By Nomad721 - Henderson, Kentucky

Absolutely the best service we had during our entire trip!! The variety of food was outstanding and the servers went out of the way to make our meal both fun and enjoyable. They even split our hotpot so we could have one section for our vegetarian daughter and the other for meat. One note- the spicy hot pot is very good but definitely spicy. The tableside noodles were fun to watch and interactive. There is a sauce bar where you can make your own dipping sauce which was a nice touch. The same bar has fresh fruit and other condiments. At the end of the meal they gave each couple a small "to go" snack bag that looked like a toasted grain. It was slightly sweet and made a nice walking snack. We would highly recommend this restaurant. It is part of a chain and it was the second location for some of our party- both locations had excellent service and food.
