it's a charming place somehow: inside, time stopped in the fifties or early sixties; outside, the aare river goes by, bye. The staff was friendly, the food ok. But it could be better, should be better if you look at the prices.

The Traube was open on Christmas Day, so we made the trip to Trimbach, a little town a few bus-ride minutes away from Olten – and was it ever worth the trip! We were received warmly by the young service team and seated at a beautifully appointed table. While the Traube looks like an unassuming Swiss inn on the outside, the interior surprises by an austere modernism that serves as a fine background for chef Arno Sgier’s innovative and wonderfully light cuisine. We ordered the six-course degustation menu and were simply delighted by the stellar sequence of wonderful dishes – all based on superb products and executed with great skill and care. We knew we were in for a treat after the unusual amuse bouche, consisting of tallarin in a saffran-anis broth with pristine little mussels.
The young woman who was in charge of the extensive wine list found us the perfect matching wines, from a honeyed Riesling Auslese to accompany the “crème brûlée” of foie gras to a powerful Amarone that entered a happy marriage with the Irish Angus beef filet. The talented and accommodating chef bid us a friendly adieu after we enjoyed a great Christmas meal. For those who love excellent food in a stylish and friendly ambience, the Traube in Trimbach indeed vaut le voyage.
One more thing: Sgier is a member of Jeunes Restaurateurs d'Europe (Young Restaurateurs of Europe), my favorite association of chefs (http://www.jre.net/index.php?pageId=1). Every time I see the sign of that association outside a restaurant, I know I can look forward to a fine meal.

An incredible restaurant with tradition.
Great food and service. Very friendly and rustic.
Order a pint of Weiss beer means „machine weize“.
The „Olma bratwurst“ and the „Pastetli“ are amazing!
Highly recommended to hand around for a beer and some traditional Swiss food!
Price wise for 2 pax; few beers and a proper main course will cost around SFR60-70.-

Italian kitchen with diferent and tasty pizzas and pastas. The restaurant La Carbonara Olten is direct next to the main train station of Olten after the rail nr.12. A few steps away. Ideal for a short lunch or dinner, as business meeting or for privat reasons.
Simple food of good quality with a fair price-value. I like the salad dressing. Unfortunately, in general the food is rather heavy and I could not eat it on a every day base.

This visit has been a long time coming, we have been here a couple of years ago and always wanted to come back for the lovely food and incredible setting.
The restaurant is a bit out of the way but is an easy 30 min drive both from Zürich and Basel. Don’t expect some hidden treasure of a village though, it’s a fairly ordinary location with a considerable amount of pass-through traffic. All the more respect for the owners to have managed to create a place as charming as this right next to a busy road. As far as i am concerned, the restaurant itself has the most amazing building and dining area out of all the high end places we have been. It is warm and elegant at the same time and manages to mix traditional with modern very well. There are a couple of distinctly different areas inside the building; the entrance, the lounge, the main dining room upstairs all come together as a unity despite having a different feel to them.
The food matches the surroundings, we had a tasting menu with 5 courses that was delicious and filling at the same time. We received our first amouse bouche with fish, beef tartar while we were still studying the menu. This was a bit odd as it was a bit difficult to hold the huge menu in our hands and not being able to put it on the table; also, we were not going to start eating anyway.
They were very flexible with the courses in the menu, allowing us to mix in dishes from the vegetarian menu as well as selecting a dessert from one of the a la carte options.
The restaurant website does not have the menus (i couldn’t find them), i will refer to fish or meat as such instead of the exact description, so as not to write something incorrect. First course was smoked fish with carrots of various shape, consistency, texture and a little salad. It was a great start but not as good as the fish that followed, which was perfect in every way. Fresh fish simply cooked with very little condiments…but very, very tasty. I had sweetbread next with morchels which was also excellent, followed by angus steak which was slightly bland and not particularly memorable. My wife tried the vegetarian cannelloni, again with morchels, which she loved.
Service before dessert was again a bit weird with minardises coming before my partner’s dessert or my cheese platter. I would have expected this at the very end.
As i said, I picked the cheese platter instead of dessert and managed to select the best combination of cheese that i ever had in a restaurant. I don’t know whether it was down to pure luck but each and every piece was special and somehow slightly unexpected in taste. According to my wife, her chocolate dessert was delicious. There was a bonus dessert at the very end with a small piece of chocolate cake and a very bland ice cream. It was a nice gesture but in a way ruined the excellent ending that i felt after the cheese.
Prices have gone up compared to a couple of years ago, expect to leave almost 200 CHF per person for a 5 course meal with water. They also had a long 13 course menu that was close to 300 per person.
It was nice being back and we enjoyed the experience a lot but i think it will be another couple of years before we return. The restaurant deserves the 2 michelin stars it has and i am sure they will hold it for a long time coming.

The dishes were globally good though I should say it was not the best fried fish I had so far. The ambient really nice and prices not that terribly high like you would expect in Switzerland.

What a wonderful evening sitting outside On a shaded patio next to the river in Olten. Fresh fish is their specialty & they do it extremely well. To begin our repast, we chose steamed mussels in a rich tomato/white wine sauce. Next, a great Caesar...MoreHello, Thank you very much for your positive feedback, we are pleased that your visit was satisfying. It would be great to greet you once again on our premises. Best regards Ristorante Lungo Mare

The restaurant is very nice and the offered choice is wide and tasty. The meal, and expecially the meat which I have tried, is very well prepared and cooked. The staff is nice and friendly. I strongly encourage to have a dinner in this restaurant, strongly reccomended book quite in advance.

Came here for a function. What a fun place! The décor ist "industrial", as you would expect it in a former workshop of a locksmith. The friendly and efficient service and a brilliantly executed four course dinner, with a prime-rib as its centre-piece, made my evening.
