We are so glad we stumbled upon this place--just off the highway--on our way from Lisbon to the Algarve. It is super easy to get to and has great free parking, which is a bonus. The staff speaks limited English, but they were super friendly and helpful. The food was super wonderful and a great value! I had the eels, my husband had a grilled fish (what exactly it was was lost in translation ha ha), shared a jug of house wine, and had a little espresso and ice cream dessert. It was fresh, well-prepared, and hit the spot! We totally recommend this place! (Also, many items on the menu are naturally gluten free and suitable for celiacs)

The place was soo busy and crowded and it's hard to hear people sat with you because of all the noise but there are positives about this place.
The food was actually really nice. We tried bison, deer, zebra, ostrich and Kangaroo
You can either cook it yourself or have them cooked for you. You can chose different tasting ones or just one particular steak.
We were a table of about 18/20 with children too and they had loads of fun, just be warned it's a little pricey.
Would I recommend? Yes
Would I return? I have this is my 3rd time!

Mar da Palha

This is the restaurant where we always go as family since it is closer than going to Setubal looking for fresh fish.
The restaurant is outside Moita and Alhos vedros in the industrial park of Moita (PIM), so not a usual place for a restaurant, lots of space to park. Inside there's a smoking area (during the weekdays) and a non smoking area...even if there's nothing separating both rooms, I already complained to the owner but I think it will take some time until it becomes a full non-smoking place. From non-smoking room you have an open window wall where you can see and hear basically everything is happening in the kitchen and where you can also pick the fish you want to eat, typically when a restaurant has a open window to the kitchen is because it has nothing to hide and that's the first step for a good restaurant.
Even if is known as a fresh fish restaurant (mainly grilled) and I'm not a meat lover seems the meat (huge menu) is also very good. During the week and lunch time you have special lunch menu prices.
The service is very good and if you are lucky to be served by Mr.Jorge a good laugh is guaranty. From the entrances, to the main dishes to the endless list of good Deserts we always have a good reason to go back and have a nice family lunch at Mar da Palha.
Until last month it was open daily non-stop, but now it is closing on Thursdays.
Once it becomes a full non-smoking place I will give the 5 stars it deserves.

Loved the location and the food was really good. Had the fried calamari which came with french fries and pickles. The grilled flat fish was excellent. Wine selection is moderate. We had two servers and one of them was wonderful, the other a bit rude.

Velho Cangalho

Reviewed By Luis S - Bien Hoa, Vietnam

Eating in Portugal is a job for the adventurous and for the cognoscenti. It's all the more fun when you have someone local to show you around. Generally, there are restaurants for every price range. This review is about one of the 'Family restaurants' that are so popular in Portugal with the Portuguese. These are rarely frequented by tourists, which is a shame as they are an inexpensive and tasty way to try 'real' Portuguese cuisine.
Velho Cangalho is one such restaurant, and it lives in the luxury of having establihsed itself as one of the first such restaurants in the area.
However, despite the name, it has lost some of its appeal of late. having taken on board fruit served with meat idea as adopted from Brazilian cuisine, it hasn´t evolved in the slightest in the last 15 years. And, whilst it is relatively inexpensive, the food has simply been overtaken, and, more often than not, the steaks are gristly and lacking in flavour.
I have eaten at Cangalho (both the Old (velho) and the new (novo) restaurants) and the quality is the same.
A 'bitoque' (pronounced bee-tok) is a traditional lunchtime meal: pork steak with chips, salad fried egg, and rice will set you back around EUR7-8. Their 'Terra e Mar' (Sea and Land) platter costs in the region of EUR23 and serves 2.
If you are not bothered by general blandness, you might actually enjoy the food, but why pay more when there are no less than 4 other restaurants within 4km that serve the same basic stuff and charge around 2-3 EUR less?
Again, I have nothing against the restaurant staff or the location (easy to find, easy to park, halfway between Palmela/Setubal and within easy reach of Lisbon and Freeport shopping outlet), it's just the food has really suffered of late from, how shall I put it? Lack of inspiration?

A real "taberna" (the portuguese concept of tavern): very good food, unpretentious atmosphere, friendly service and reasonable prices.
As a starter you must order "torrresmos STEC" the best pork rind/crackling supplied by a awarded producer close to the the restaurant.
For the mains everything is good if it comes from the charcoal grill, either sardines (cacth in the ocean some hour before) or a juicy steak (cows fed in the meadows of Alentejo), or boneless pork chops (a must of flavour).
And, during summer, ask a table in the courtyard ...

Yesterday, as a last option, I ended up eating this pork fillets house. The choice went through a pork fillet with egg and other with cheese, accompanied by a plate of fries and two beers. We were outside and only the gnats are a problem. Good relationship between quality and price, good and cheap. The pork fillets are very good but, it is a waypoint.
