A Lareira

Reviewed By JElliot32 - New South Wales, Australia

The restaurant is excellent, and gets its name from a massive log-burning fireplace that takes up one corner of the room. It comes complete with spit and metal racks holding cooking pots and is framed by two stacks of plates warming in the glow. Next to the fireplace is a large pile of logs, ready to burn. (See pic.)
From the street the restaurant is far from inviting, as what you see is a large and unadorned room populated by older men sitting at tables drinking coffee and wine. You pass straight through this room to enter the restaurant - with its log fire blazing - and enter another domain. It is much more formal and a bit old-fashioned, with tables dressed with starched white tablecloths and waiters spooning vegetables from tureens onto your plate.
The meals are massive and excellent value for money. Lunch was 12 Euros and consisted of bean soup, bread, wine, steak and veggies (potatoes, carrots, more beans), coffee, and a dessert of poached pears in port-wine. It was all delicious - and very filling. If that was too much you could just order items individually such as the soup or salad for 1.50 Euros each. Coffee was 1.20. A fantastic experience. Note that there is not a lot of English spoken here.

Kalifa Ok

Tucked in a side stret just down from the castle remains is Kalifa. On arrival you might think the place is more modern than it actually is as it has had a recent makeover. It is however a fairly standard codfish and steak menu restaurant. Friendly and attentive staff ( but it was a quiet Tuesday night), food was tasty steak and fish for us!, portions on the large side.
The wine list is local and like the food menu - not extensive which makes it easy.
Overall a decent restaurant, but the offering and ambience overall didn't stack up to the cost if our meal for two in a quiet, off the beat town. You didn't feel the owners were capitalising on anything particularly authentic or local. We ate similar food elsewhere, this is not an area for an exploration of full Portuguese cuisine (stick to the coast for that), but at less expense.
Our meal for two with douro wine cost €50, probably €15-20 too much unless you value portion size over better fare.

Modern concept with typical food mainly! The quality of the ingredients was outstanding as we experienced with the flavours. The service was quite slow. Enjoyed the wine card!

Restaurante Estoril

It was a pleasant surprise to find a French chef greeting us at the door. The meal was excellent, well served, pleasant waitress and very tasty without that over presence of olive oil that is common in Portugal.
I had melon and ham followed by octopus (insisting on eating traditional Portuguese throughout) and both were brilliant.
Would eat here again, as there were many interesting dishes on the menu. the local carafe wine was palatable and inexpensive.
