When you search for 10 best places to eat this name eventually comes up. Well we had a fairly good start when we left Guwahati. My wife being the true north indian following Navratra wouldn't give me company for non vegetarian food. So we and another family ended up ordering dam aalo for breakfast in a dhaba near jorabat. It was amazing. The next stop was Orchid for lunch and we ended up ordering a variety of food worth 1040, where we had vegetable Hakka noodle, pork chilly and curry as well as chicken butter masala. It was even better.
So high on expectations and bit of luck we thought we must go to city hut, one of the most sort out restaurants in Shillong. We pushed our luck and here the disaster struck, the damaalu was horrible , so was the chicken hakka noodles, we also had chicken Biryani which which was equally tasteless.
The other interesting aspect was, when we pointed out about the food especially dam aalo being horrible and we returned it back.

An unplanned stop at this wonderfully restored Dak Bungalow was the highlight of our Cherrapunjee visit. Very tastefully re-decorated recently, this place served excellent Chinese food for lunch in their beautiful dining room. Service was with a smile! Loved the location & Decor!

They have an elaborate spread for breakfast, thus take time and have breakfast like a king. most of the items on the menu are home grown with local condiments and food available.

Read excellent reviews abt the restaurant so went with high hopes. The worst dal rice ever had. And the worst momos. The momos were smelling. Had to return it. The staff was uncourteous to apologize and instead said ki this is how they serve. Take it or leave it. Horrible dirty caserole in which they were served. Dosent even qualify for a shady canteen of a factory.. forget being called a restaurant.

This place works rather like a fast food joint where you pay before you eat but in this case payment is made at a small window resembling an old fashioned railway ticket office. Payment out of the way it's time to wash up in the very clean washing area. Once you have a table a lady comes and takes your payment slip and before long your food arrives - as much rice as you can eat and good sized portions of whatever you've ordered. As a European I used a spoon and fork without attracting much interest from the other diners who mostly used their fingers.
So, good tasty food in large portions served in clean surroundings at a very fair price.
