Things to do in Koprivshtitsa

We stopped at "Chuchura" for a light lunch after a long stroll around the museums in Koprivshtitsa. The service was fast, anyway just about half of the tables were occupied, the waitress was polite and attentive.
The food is traditional Bulgarian cuisine and specialties from the region of Koprivshtitsa. We opted for the soups and our son had a Tatar kofta (meatball) with "lyutenitsa" and white beans - all the food was so delicious and felt like it had just been cooked by your grandmother in the village.
The ambience is nice, interior is rustic with a lot of cowbells hanging from the ceiling.
Portions are quite big and prices are very cheap - salad, 1 main, 2 soups, 3 pitta breads (parlenka), 2 cups of tea, 2 bottles of beer and 2 pancakes summed up to 33 leva (about 17€).
Recommended if you want to have a cheap tasty lunch or dinner.

By coincidence I happened to be travelling on Bulgarian's Independence Day from Veliko Tarnovo, where independence had officially been declared in 1878, to the mountain village of Koprivshtitsa, home of some of the most important freedom fighters. Naturally, when arriving there - despite the bad weather - the place was full of daytrippers, who often had lunch in one of the restaurants there. Having been so busy during the day, many places were not keen on offering dinner and closed down late afternoon.
When entering the restaurant 'Dyado Liben' at 6.30pm I was approached by a friendly young lady, who told me that they had closed, but that they would serve me something upstairs. There was nobody around, when I went there, but later other guests arrived.
The restaurant, whose name means 'Grandfather Liben', as I found out, when researching it, refers to a figure by local writer and national hero Lyuben Karavelov, executed by the Ottomans one year after independence. It is located in a big wooden building in the style of the Bulgarian Renaissance, as most houses in this beautiful and very strictly protected village.
First a non smiling waitress - not the lady I had encountered in the courtyard - brought a menu card and waited for my immediate orders, until I made her understand that I wanted to study the card first. She never appeared again. Much later a young man showed up, who had a better understanding of English.
I ordered, besides a small jug of red wine, four different plates. After each order the waiter asked me: 'Only one?'. And in the end: 'Is that all?' Very funny.
All was well prepared and tasty though. The Salad with grilled Green peppers, the 'Kashkaval Pane', the breaded local cheese, the grilled Nadenitsa, a home made and well spiced sausage and the typical Bulgarian flatbread Parlenka, which had the shape of a small pizza.

We stayed for several days in Kopritshivtsa and kept returning to this restaurant because it really had all the qualities a "mehana" (traditionnal bulgarian outlet) should have: nice traditionnal dining room, delicious dishes, good prices, and nice service. The food was incredibly good: salata shopska (tomatoes, cucumbers, Bulgarian sheep cheese), try the "Kavarma" (hot pot cooked in the oven with chicken or pork), the garlic bread was also delicious.
The prices were lower than in many places in Bulgaria, although the food was really superior.

This restaurant was very nice and very cosy. They had a great roaring firepalce and lovely decor which was very traditional. We only had the soup, but the range of dishes on offer was very good and the soup we had was fantastic.

A centrally located restaurant in Koprivshtitsa boasting for its grilled dishes and specialties.
Cozy and warm atmosphere.
Local cuisine, organic products.
The restaurant was full and the service was satisfying.
Seating both indoors and outdoors in the garden depending on weather conditions.
The Grilled we had was exceptionally tasty, the salad was freshly cut and refreshing and the potatoes great. (Hard to find really tasty grilled meat in Bulgaria).
What it was a bit disturbing was the loud Bulgarian folklore music….but we managed!

We stayed overnight in Koprivshtitsa and had some food in Bashtina Kashta. There was a really nice fire place in the restaurant which was good as it was cold outside! We ordered a lamb soup (funnily titled "lamb sacrifice") and a shopska salad for starters, and a baked cheese, sausage and egg dish as well as hunter's steak for mains. The food wasn't bad, though the mains were in small portions. The descriptions were also not very accurate as it suggested there would be sausages and mushrooms with the steak, but think it was more bits of pork, olives, peppers and pickled gherkins. I think the steak might have been pork rather than beef - not sure. We enjoyed the dessert of pancakes with walnut and honey. The restaurant had WiFi which was very welcome! Would give a "good" rating if it exists. Not a bad place to visit and the prices are reasonable for a hotel.
