Kaunas (/ˈkaʊnəs/; Lithuanian: [ˈkɐʊˑnɐs] ( listen); also see other names) is the second-largest city in Lithuania and has historically been a leading centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the biggest city and the centre of a county in Trakai Municipality of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since 1413. In the Russian Empire, it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate from 1843 to 1915. It served as temporary capital of Lithuania during the interwar period, while the traditional capital of Vilnius was part of Poland between 1920 and 1939. During that period Kaunas has been nicknamed the Little Paris because of rich cultural and academic life, fashion, construction of countless Art Deco, Lithuanian National Romanticism architectural style buildings as well as popular furniture, interior design of the time and widespread café culture. The city interwar architecture is regarded as one of the finest examples of the European Art Deco and received the European Heritage Label, it also resulted in naming Kaunas the first city in Central and Eastern Europe as a UNESCO City of Design. In 2022, Kaunas will be the European Capital of Culture, together with the Luxembourgish city of Esch-sur-Alzette.

,,Medziotojų uzeiga", oldest restaurant in Kaunas, is situated in the very heart of Kaunas - Town Hall square. The guests of the restaurant are treated with exceptional game meat dishes since 1965. The main goal of the restaurant is to use only fresh Lithuanian products. Therefore the cuisine of ,,Medziotoju uzeiga" is especially valued for its high quality meals and, of course, a perfect service.
We tried game carpaccio and two types of deer. Carpaccio was quite, but had a sauce so strong you could not taste the meat itself. Both deer dishes had well-done meat, which again, effectively killed the meat. Great ideas, bad implementation.Thank you for your review. Every your comment help us to be better. Sorry you had a bad experience in our restaurant.

A good place to try some crafted beers, and the food is also something to keep in mind. The treat is the honey beer, give it a try ?

We visited to of this restaurants branches in Kaunas. Our first visit was at the branch in K.Donelacio and it was great! Lovely comfort food, friendly service and a nice and warm atmosphere. We had the most tender and juicy duck with red cabbage, dumplings, salad, pannacotta, beer and coffee, and everything was really good! Very reasonable price as well.. Unfortunately we had a bad experience at the Old town branch... Grumpy and inattentive waiters, terrible music, and a lousy and unappetizing dinner.. It's a shame the owners of the restaurant doesn't make sure that all their branches have the same good standard.

SENIEJI RUSIAI (Old Cellars) - a European standard restaurant established in the 17 century cellars in the heart of Kaunas old town. The restaurant with the interior in the style of middle ages attracts visitors with their Napoleon's Hall, Noblemen's Hall, and the Hall of Guns. In one of the halls, there is a fresco depicting the Middle French Army crossing the river Nemunas on 24 June 1812 according to the lithography of De C. Montte. The restaurant offers seats for 100 persons, and is capable of servicing 120 persons during social evenings or buffets. We can offer European cuisine for gourmands, a large wine collection from the whole world, high class services as well as elegant and sophisticated environment.
a local colleague brings us here, in the old town. Very nice place, having tables outside along the main pedestrian street or inside, underground in the cellar.
Cellar is so beautiful, with visible bricks and vaulted ceiling and "medieval" decorations (armours, helmets and guns).
Service is perfect, very kind and precise guys.
Good choice in dishes, quite "international" (nothing really local: soups, meat, fish). I got the lamb, actually well done even if I asked medium cooked and I got it definitely well done.
Medium to high prices (compared with the town offer), but some euros more are acceptable according to its elegance and location.

The pizza I've ordered (with Nduja sausage) was too greasy, even thou hot and spicy. Capuccino was nice, tiramisu kinda strange - cannot taste any savoyardi biscuits soaked in coffee.
It's not exactly rude, but I prefer when staff at least say goodbuy when customers leave.
Would probably come to try another pizza.

Of all the Indian food places I have been outside India what stands out about Moksha is that it got Indian fusion food right. I have been to many restaurants serving Indian food tailored only to foreign tastes thus loosing authenticity. However the dishes at Moksha would appeal to both Indians and others. The chef has retained the authenticity and essence of Indian homemade cooking. Hats off to the chef!
Also the best Masala chai. Most of the places I have been to outside India has got it wrong. I would want to visit Kaunas again just to eat at Moksha.
The restaurant itself has a very nice feel to it. We loved the choice of percussion music.

Re-opened in May of 2014, restaurant UOKSAS represents contemporary, seasonal and creative cuisine. Simple, unpretentious and modern, rough interior is warmed with cozy wooden details and lush of greens. Suitable for upscale or casual everyday dining.
We tried a tasting menu and and it was good with a nice touch of traditional Lithuanian cuisine. Especially, loved the desserts. Also, chef seemed very pleasant and loving his job.
However, the other staff of restaurant looked quite unprofessional.
First of all, the reservation was made on-line for a tasting menu. When we came to the restaurant, our waitress said that it is not impossible to get a tasting menu. Then he went to check and came back with a complaining how messy their system is and we will get our tasting menu.
Another not quite unpleasant moment was, when just before putting the plate on the table the piece of fish fell off the original plating place and the waitress got really confused and finally just walked away leaving the way it was.
Finally, the bottleneck of drinking water was full of hard water spots (now regretting for not taking a photo). It looked not very pleasant but we decided not to make a big deal because it's just water. When we got a check it was clear that we had to complaint about it. When you pay 3 eur for a tap water you deserve to drink it from a very shiny bottle.
These unpleasant moments haven't ruined our evening and I would come back once again, especially, for desserts.

"Siesta" restaurant is located besides the highway Kaunas - Klaipeda, 20 km away from Kaunas, approximately 20 minutes drive from the center. We offer elegant environment and high-quality European cuisine at its best. Locally sourced catfish and beef is recognized by our clients - they often say we serve probably the best sirloin of beef and catfish fillet they have ever had. The Chef of the kitchen Jaroslav Orshevski is a member of Lithuanian National Team representing the country in international culinary competitions and bringing home some recognition. "Siesta" restaurant is a good choice for families with kids - children playground outside and special kids menu at your service. Parking lot is spacious enough for campers as well as minivans.
A fine restaurant with great stakes and fish. Just off the highway. Everything I saw people eating looked delicious. I don't know about local prices but I would have thought it's more expensive. Most of the dishes are 10 euros or less. It did take a while to get the food though.
