We kicked off a long weekend break away with lunch at this gem in the New Forest.
Excellent and friendly service was matched by a fabulously prepared meal which included gravad lax, seafood salad, lamb with crispy bits, turbot and venison with blueberries.
The goats cheese to start was the standout for me and the wine selection was excellent.
The prices are London-ish but in this diner's opinion definitely worth it.
Would highly recommend a diversion.

The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
Wow........ Went to the Rose and Thistle for a Valentines Day lunch, and weren't disappointed.
The staff were absolutely magnificent, providing a level of service second to none (equivalent to a top end restaurant). We were seated next to a roaring log fire, and our coats swiftly taken to be hung up. The food was nothing short of sublime - venison cooked to absolute perfection with the barman suggesting red wine to compliment the food, much like a trained sommelier! The whole experience blew us away - perfection from start to finish.....we'll definitely be back.

Popped into this pub today, almost got kicked out by manager as i wasn't sure that i wanted to eat. All tables in conservatory area were apparently reserved, although nobody sat at these tables. I ordered 2x mochas, these arrived cold and the waitress told us that she always makes them cold.
Regardless off the poor drinks, ive never felt so unwelcomed in a public house before. What an obnoxious manager!

Absolutely horrified
We have been coming here for years...
And now told told today that we are no longer allowed to buy a child roast dinner to feed our dog.
DON'T know who has taken over but shame on you. We should be able to spend our money on what we like.
Who has this hurt!
I hasten to add we brought his own bowl..
It was made clear from arrival that it's no longer dog friendly. We booked a table and said we had a dog... when we arrived we had been put in the furthest corner on the highest chairs. I mentioned they were high.. and it would be difficult to keep him under control if we could not reach him. Her comment was it's a dog it will be on the floor.
Yes rude blonde lady he is on the floor but every time I need to do anything with him I have to get off my seat in order to do so.
Come here if you don't have a dog but if you do AVOID.
I think everyone else knows already as there were no other dogs in there... and in our previous visits it's always been full of walkers.

This is a traditional new forest pub that has been given a very tasteful makeover. The soup starter and chocolate mouse desert were very good but the pheasant was a little over done. Service and the Trelawney Cornish bitter were excellent.

Four of us came in for lunch but ended up choosing from the breakfast menu and we were not disappointed. Two veggie breakfasts, one full English, and one bacon and egg sandwich:all beautifully cooked and presented. This is a lovely cafe/tearoom with a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff are happy and friendly. There are some good choices on the menu and prices are very reasonable.

Warm welcome upon our arrival at this hidden jem.
We opted for burger and chips which was very tasty with fresh burgers made just for this cafe. Chips were fab along with the dressed salad.
Pixie was also looked after when staff brought her out a dog biscuit!

Popped in here last night as we are staying at sandy balls (5 min drive away).
We were early so expected it to be empty but it wasn't, the restaurant was half full and there was a continuous line of people coming in for their take away who all seemed to know the staff well!
Family run I would assume and good decent food.
Hubby had tikka masala which comes as standard with rice and a veg curry! Also happy to accommodate our younger son with a half portion.
I had lamb shashlik which was really good, Bombay potatoes were a little bland but would defiantly go again if we were in the area
