Found by chance using sat nav places to eat. Parked easily and had a warm welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Great 80’s menu, something for everyone. Faggots, steak, gammon, lasagne and chicken tikka. Chips were perfect. Had room for sweets, treacle pudding, ice cream, trifle and knickerbocker glory. Fairly empty when we arrived at 5pm, packed when we left at 7.15pm. Excellent bottle of Merlot. The view across to Exmouth was a perfect end to our holiday in Dawlish. Service was excellent and so was the chef! We will return.

Stumbled across this little place on a trip to Dawlish.
The whole menu can be offered as gluten free, which meant she could eat and enjoy her lunch.

We are a family friendly, family run freehouse bar and restaurant right on the seafront at Dawlish Warren. We provide everything from Seattles Finest Coffees to a full menu that covers lunchtime snacks to hearty main courses and desserts to die for. We have a separate childrens menu and a free soft play area for our younger guests. Along with a great range of local ales, we have a full range of lagers, bitters and ciders both draught and bottled. Our wines are a great blend of classics and new world. We are happy to welcome any four legged friends in our lower bar area and outside balconies as long as they are happy to mix with our other guests. With stunning views of the surrounding coastline and just two minutes from the sandy Beaches, The Boathouse is a perfect venue for any occasion
We had a lovely walk from Dawlish to this pub, which serves food, in Dawlish Warren. Our food was lovely as was the drinks. However what put us off and made me both very angry and scared was the number of dogs, Barking incessantly and loudly at everything, everyone and other dogs. There was one dog in particular who's dog and general aggressive manner was so bad, its owner ignored it, the bar staff did nothing at all to sort this out. Many other diners were complaining and though the bar staff kept looking over to the dog and the owner we all had to suffer until the dog and its owner left the premises. I even mentioned to one of the serving staff how I felt and to ask for something to be done but I might have been talking to a wall the amount of help I, and all of us others, got. Interestingly as I left Dawlish Warren I saw the dog owner get into her car with her son at the doctor's surgery car park. If this lady is a doctor I do not think much of her personal ethics. Anyway if you, as future clients, want to have a meal in the centre of a noisy chaotic dogs home then eat at this pub, otherwise stay well away. Dogs should not be allowed into areas where food is being served, young children could be, people who are allergic to dogs ie asthma etc, those who are frightened of dogs and the sheer basic down to earth hygiene, or lack of it, point of view.

It's rare to find such a consistently good restaurant. Everyone I take here raves about it - and for good reason. Masu Dal was the highlight on this trip.

Here at The Ugly Duckling Restaurant, we pride ourselves on the high standards of our mainly British cuisine and the friendliness of our personal service. Our speciality is our daily carvery, served from 12.00 noon, which also includes our home cooked "Dish of the Day", and on Sundays we have our famous "Four Meat Carvery". The Carvery is in addition to our comprehensive, all day menu. We are open from 8.00am daily,(10.00 on Sundays)for fine coffees, to drink in or takeaway, and traditional breakfasts. We currently open every day except Mondays, and on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through to 7.00pm. We are fully licensed and stock some excellent wines. Look out for our special evenings which include a French night to welcome the Beaujolais Nouveau in November and Burns Night in January. We look forward to seeing you, but you are strongly advised to book if you are coming for lunch.
Lots to choose from on the menu. 2 diners had carvery. Choice of four meats and loads of veg, Yorkie and gravy just like home. Large jacket potato with prawns looked delicious. Really friendly staff and great customer service. Will definitely return.

If I am honest we only bought from here because we thought it was the only chippy open on a wet Sunday! Thank goodness we did. The food was outstanding and very reasonably priced. The man who served (I think the owner) was friendly and chatty(even with his singing ). We went here from necessity but will definitely return and recommend to all.
