Addis Ababa Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Addis Ababa

December 7, 2017 Darleen Reid

Sometimes referred to as the capital of Africa, Addis Ababa is a buzzing hub of economic, social and political activity and home to such notable offices as the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The diversity of its people is reflected in the many churches, mosques and museums, including the Ethiopian National Museum which houses the fossilized skeleton of Dinkinesh, or Lucy, the Australopithecine discovered in the area in the 1970s.

Makush Gallery

Reviewed By africanaddict - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

We tried lunch for our first meal at Makush. It was a 50-50 experience. My husband really liked his beef filet in whiskey sauce with pasta carbonara. I had the beef cutlet with pasta putanesca. His was very good. Mine not quite as good. My deep fried beef cutlet was very overdone, and the putanesca sauce was way overpowered by chilis (listed as green peppers in the menu - I should have remembered that it meant chilis and not green capsicum). Menu also promised capers ... not a one. I pretty much had to leave all the pasta - just too hot to eat.
The wine pours were extremely generous, and the macchiatos were terrific. We'll probably give it another go for a meal, but so far, I'm preferring Gusto Restaurant for my Italian cravings.

A basic but really lovely restaurant with terrific staff, so polite and welcoming. The middle eastern meals are tasty. The hummus with flatbred mouth watering, and the shish tahouk combined with the Ethiopian "hellish-spicy" cream is just superb.

It was my first time to eat Ethiopian food. This place came highly recommended so I ended up having lunch and dinner there. The food was excellent, the service good and the local honey wine blurred my senses. I can definitely recommend this place.
They have an interesting cultural dance show on every night. I enjoyed it.
If you go there for lunch there is no show. On the upside: You can actually talk to each other because it is not so noisy.

A perfect place to bring guests, or a perfect place to come as a tourist. May seem tacky, but absolutely isn’t. Brings to life the other cultures of Ethiopia with the music and dancing with awesome interactive dancers. The buffet is okay, but ordering a classic bayonet is the way to go.

Note that there are no street addresses in Ethiopia! I've done my best to describe its location as would be done by one person living in Ethiopia to another. I lived in Ethiopia for 2 years, and I assure you this place exists. For those who have never tried Yemeni cusine before, Yemeni food is to me where north africa meets the middle east. Our tasting experience has been wonderful, and together with their hundred fold hospitality, we can all agree to say that all our visits have been extra ordirnary. Through our visits here, we have had a veriaty of different dishes. To metion a few; seltah, a type of lamb stew served in a hot iron pot, and the traditional lamb dish, mandi, where the meat was so tender that it fell of the bone by just looking at it, and hence melted on the tongue. The taboleh and hummus plates are delightful together with the complimentary fresh bread that repetitively comes to the table. The food is exquisite! Furthermore, the staff is lead by an increadibly caring and friendly owner who takes his time to come and assure that his guests choose a menu that would be to their utmost satisfaction. So, if you are tired of the poor customer service you usually get at the most restaurants around addis, this is definitively the place to go! To top it all, the portions are abundant, and the price is abosolute affordable. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Bait al mandi gets full score on the die. Congratulations!

Sichuan Restaurant

For a fresh take on Chinese cuisine, look no further than Sichuan Restaurant. Located on the 3rd floor of the ODA building, infront of Zemen Bank in Kasanchis which the restaurant offers splendid view of the flourishing city, as well as a cozy dining atmosphere. Owner Nebiyu Ermias is an Ethiopian chef who worked his way up from washing dishes at China Bar and Restaurant working in the kitchens of some of Addis Ababa's leading restaurants. He opened Sichuan Restaurant eight years ago and takes pride in the restaurant's standards of service. The friendly staff are quick to accommodate but not overbearing. Nebiyu is not satisfied unless the customer is happy. He is constantly changing and improving the restaurant in response to customer feedback. His desire for a "Chinese Bistrol" feel is apparent in the way he personally greets his diners after every meal, ensuring their satisfaction with the dinning experience. The entire staff is highly trained to make each guest feel welcome. Nebiyu explains, "It is about enjoyment when you come to the restaurant. You need to feel at home."But it is not just the service or the relaxing atmosphere that sets the Sichuan Restaurant apart. The food is always fresh and made to order. As head chef and owner, Nebiyu concentrates on the highest quality in ingredient preparation; nothing leaves the kitchen unless it passes his personal inspection. The dishes are prepared with a Hong Kong influence, so they are light and fresh. The steamed beef dumplings are hearty and flavorful, as are the long homemade egg noodles. The tasty spring rolls were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, not greasy. Other popular dishes include sizzling steak, tangy sweet and sour pork, the smooth hot and sour soup, and golden fried dumplings. A perfect final course is toffee fried bananas, a harmonious blend of smooth flavor and crunchy texture. Encompassing spicy dishes from the South region of China and light dishes from the North, Sichuan has a flavor for everyone. "Cooking is my passion ... I want the guests to feel the texture and the freshness of the food," Nebiyu notes. And it is hard not to. Dinning at Sichuan is like being a personal guest in someone's home. The warm atmosphere, friendliness of the staff, and good food make this a place to come back to again and again.

We'd been craving some Chinese good, and friends referred us to Sichuan. What a great place. It took us a bit to find it - look up to third floor when on the street to see their signs. Go through the Oda Building lobby to the back of the building and walk up to 3rd floor. Once you're inside the restaurant, very nice and casual setting.
We shared the steamed pork dumplings (8 to an order) for a starter, and they were great! Good flavor, and perfect soy-based sauce to accompany.
We tried the orange chicken and sizzling beef for our mains - both were very tasty and fresh. Rice is an extra that must be ordered, but one order is sufficient for 2 people.
Attentive service, great food, good prices. We'll definitely be back!

When my true Italian friends who were in town for a visit and tired of the local food, I took them to Grani D' P.
From the entrance they liked the trees and farmed and the old building setting...DESTA the elegant and sharp Head Waiter sat us at the center and we order three different dished and salad to really taste my guest buds, to the Italian food versed waitress.( the chef a she was not around)
And the sea food spaghetti and the steak were the best authentic flavored , the lasagna was 'potable' according the experts.
When we paid the price was so reasonable and they tipped well.
