The castle is the reason to visit Xativa!
It is strategically located on the ancient roadway Via Augusta leading from Rome across the Pyrenees and down the Mediterranean coast to Cartagena and Cádiz.
In 1092, the castle fell into the occupation of the Almoravid dynasty who were expelled in an uprising that took place in 1145. During this uprising, the castle was besieged by the Governor of Valencia, Marwan Abd-al-Aziz. In 1171, the Castle finally fell, along with the rest of the Levante coast, into the hands of the Almohads.
King James I of Aragon began his crusade there in the summer of 1239, finally capturing Xátiva on 22 May 1244, following a five-month siege. After submitting to the Christian monarch and signing the Treaty of Játiva the Moors handed over the smaller nearby Castle to James I, while they were allowed to continue occupying the larger castle for another two years based on the terms of the treaty.

This museum was confusing, because you entered the main building, but could not access a courtyard, which featured old carved stone, except by exiting the building. This museum has information on the Roman and other historical eras. The better museum, from my point of view, but included in the price of the ticket, was around the corner, the Casa de la Ensenaza or Museum of Fine Arts. The building is beautiful, and there are three floors of lovely diverse paintings and drawings, with the odd furnishing or sculpture as well. It is this place that has the painting of King Philip V of Spain hung upside down. He ordered the burning of Xativa in 1707. Highly recommended but be warned they shut down for the siesta.

An interesting and informative tour, followed by a generous tasting session with nibbles, all for only 5 Euros a head. A small Enterprise with easy parking and only a 5 minute stroll from the city centre. Saturday mornings only, booking essential, possibility of English guide.

We love going there! it's not in the square so it's a great place to have a good time with friends without the hustle and bustle. Love the mini gins and beers.
The best part of it is they do stand up comedy shows and live music sometimes so it's a treat :)

We called here hoping for tapas but found no food available. Reason- the football was on! Not impressed.
