Kollam (IPA: [koɭɭəm]) or Quilon (Coulão), formerly Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the Laccadive Sea coast of the Indian state of Kerala. The city is on the banks Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam has had a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in the 14th century as one of the five Indian ports he had seen during the course of his twenty-four year travels. Desinganadu's rajas exchanged embassies with Chinese rulers while there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. In the 9th Century, on his way to Canton, China, Persian merchant Sulaiman al-Tajir found Kollam to be the only port in India visited by huge Chinese junks. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublai Khan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.

Visited today, took TukTuk from hotel. Foreigners entry fee 50 rupee each plus 10 rupees for mobile phones. Tall structure with loads of stairs, however a lift takes you close to the top, but the last bit requires climbing stairs and near enough a ladder to get to the top! Not for the faint hearted or people with mobility issues. You can still go up the the floor where the lift ends and look out of the window.
Great views all around. You may need to walk a bit on completion of your trip as TukTuks are not as available as other areas.
Enjoy

If you're looking for the best views with quite relaxed atmosphere then this is the right place for you. There are many homestays in this area with in the budget. It was really very nice to experience the backwater's village life through this canoe ride. We paid 600 bucks for 2 for 2 hrs, boatmen was nice and informative. Try to avoid it in noon time as it gets hotter, morning and evening are best for it. Would highly recommend it to everyone.

I have reach at Palaruvi at 8 AM, when the first bus started from the check post to Palaruvi. After 10min travel and few steps walk reach to Palaruvi. Very nice view and mind blowing experience, we couldn't return back without bath/touch the water... very cold and sweet.... Words are not enough to explain.....

This beach is stretched quite long, with black sand. The place attraction is the fisherman's boats. I think the boats are used in many old Hindi movies and can be a photography location. Also there is a themed Kid's park.
While strolling on the beach, I came across an innocent Violin player, who volunteered to play some tunes for a small cash tip. Likes that. Came to know from my driver later that this Violin maestro is very famous in the beach.
You can glimpse sunset from here.
Other than this the place felt lonely without any soveniour shops or shacks.

Small but beautiful and well maintained Temple. Shiva is the main diety, nearby a small Ganesha is there within the premises.
Unniappam is made fresh, offered to Ganapathy and then given as prasadam. A pack of 10 costs 20rs.
Coconut, Jaggery, Rice can be offered to the god on Thulabaram.

Though a principal source of fresh water to Kollam city, it is fighting a near losing battle for survival. Unchecked and unbridled encroachment and discharge of all kinds of wastes spoil the lovely lake. Serious intervention from authorities is the need of hour not only for the sake of the lake but even for the distant Kollam city.

Jadayu Nature Park at Chadayamangalam is being constructed on a PPP basis and on completion it will have a place in Guinness book of world records for the largest bird sculpture. The huge sculpture will have a 6D theatre inside and apart from this a digital museum, ayurvedic resort etc are also under construction. There will be arrangements to view the panoramic sight from the top through the birds eye which will be something special. We visited this place few months back and work is being done and the entire project is expected to be completed by January 2018. It's going to attract people from all parts of the world since this is a unique concept.

The place has nothing special except the fact that it might be one of the largest in kerala. It is always crowded and one can easily buy fish for cheap. The place is good to see at dawn and dusk.
