The only real village and most of the population of the Los Roques National Park archipelago reside on its largest island, El Gran Roque. Visitors typically stay in converted fisherman's homes called posadas – which include meals in their rates – while indulging in the top-notch local scuba diving. The island itself is dotted with cacti and mangroves. A lighthouse erected in the late 1800s provides gorgeous views of the three western lagoons, particularly at sunset.

This beach is great for lounging in the water, but also has fantastic snorkeling just off the beach in chest deep water.

When the wind gets up and you don't fancy a bumpy boat ride to an outlying island, then this beach is in my view the best place to visit.
It's clean and if you move close to edge of the beach area there are plenty of fish and star fish to be seen via snorkelling.

Compared to other locations the beach size/length is quite small. Not great if you fancy a long walk,
The one aspect that makes it interesting is that this bay is known to host turtles, though on two different trips we only managed to see a couple of turtle heads bobbing in the water.

About 20 minutes of walking and easy climbing take you to the highest point of Gran Roque Island: the old dutch lighthouse. The place offers a complete view of the island, and an unforgettable sunset. Worth the effort. Must go!

We had lunch here on our last day in Los Roques. We sat at a table on the beach looking over the ocean. The view was fantastic. Had appetizers and a burger. The burger was underwhelming, but that is not surprising given the circumstances. The prices were a bit high compared with other restaurants on island. There are only a few restaurants on island, though, and not many with such a great view.

We had an amazing time! The staff at Oceanica helped us spend the best 5 days in Los Roques. They organized pretty much everything for us, private boat rentals, excursions, romantic dinners, visits to the main keys, transportation, hotel stay and other activities. I stayed at Posada Caracol with my husband and the service was great as well, small-private hotel with only 4 rooms (couples). We came from Texas, Unites States and the staff at Oceanica made sure we were able to get the best out of our first visit to Los Roques. I'd definitely recommend anyone planning to go to Los Roques to contact Oceanica!
