Unfortunately, Indio Maiz was seriously damaged by Hurricane Otto in 2016 so much of the habitat has been destroyed. We only saw a couple of birds and some poison frogs. We were there at 8am so maybe we would have seen more if we had arrived early. On the way to the reserve, we saw a toucan and a falcon on the Costa Rica side.

We took a private boat from San Carlos to Mancarron and stopped at Zapote on the way. I believe that you can also get a public boat to do the trip but you would need to check in San Carlos.
The island isn't too big. The side closest to San Carlos has so many different nesting birds:
roseate spoon bills
wood storks
Anhinga
herrons
egrets and more
We were able to see so much but the waves were rough and the weather not so great so getting pictures on that side of the island was difficult.
The other side of the island was much calmer and there were a number of individual birds but the nesting area is on the rough side of the island.
It is well worth the trip if you are a birder!!

I didn't stay on the island although I am considering going back and spending a night there. Walking around was enjoyable and speaking with the artisans was kind of neat.

SAN CARLOS SPORT FISHING: We booked a trip for the "Famous" tarpon fishing advertised on the San Juan River in Nicaragua. with San Carlos Sport Fishing. Once we wired our money in, the commucations with Phillipe, the owner, ceased to exist. The San Carlos Sport Fishing did pick us up at the airport, but everything went downhill from there. While we never caught a fish, fishing is fishing, but we were dumped off with some non english speaking guides and sent down river for our week of fishing. Our cell phone worked (SIM Card) and we tried to call the lodge to try to get a change of plans, but Phillipe never attempted to call us back or call the guides. We got very little for what we paid for the trip, nothing as advertised. We were extremely disappointed in the service and trip.

We rented very reasonable sit-on kayaks to tour the river from Sonja. $10 single $15 double. The river has a little current and we chose to go upstream to avoid mixing with any boats. Lovely atmospheric trip. Although I am used to kayaking my wife is the opposite. Despite this she managed easily. On return Sonja invited us back to see baby caiman that had been rescued. Did this the following day. We didn't stay at the centre but the large airy bunk rooms looked clean and comfortable enough and there are two places to eat in the village which seem to be open in turns. Also a small shop selling snacks. Great area for wildlife watching.
