Naturpark Hohe Wand

Reviewed By Malarchy - Jakarta, Indonesia

Naturpark Hohe Wand is a nature park in the beautiful setting of the Hohe Wand about an hour south of Vienna near the Schneeberg. It is hard to reach by public transport but by car the route through some incredibly picturesque villages is excellent. The Hohe Wand Mautstrasse carries a charge and is quite a twisty route. The Naturpark is a long way around up the hill so budget for an extra to the travel time. It is not well sign posted but just keep going and it eventually becomes obvious.
Entry fee is combined with the park fee on weekends and holidays. The park itself is a tiny charge of something like €1.80. It seems to be a somewhat voluntary charge when not combined with the Mautstrasse. The road costs something iike €4. There is a decent amount of parking space.
The Naturpark itself is delightful. It starts with a children's play area and the stroking zoo. The play area is good. There are a range of animals including pigs, ponies, rabbits, and deer. The deer have ferocious looking antlers.
A couple of huts do not offer too much of an experience but the labyrinth just off the path at the start is pretty good.
The Naturpark itself is essentially a series of walks. The routes all feed into one another and are generally pretty accessible. Wheelchair users will not be able to take full advantage of the park. Buggies are ok but it is hard going at times.
What makes this better than a normal walk in the forest is the twin pleasure of entertainment for children and animals. The children's entertainment comes in the form of play areas every so often around the route. Each area typically has one thing to do - a slide, a swing, climbing, jumping etc. It stops the walk being monotonous for a small child.
The animals are mainly deer and variants of goats. Depending on their sociability with humans they can either be viewed from a platform above or close up. The enclosures are large and fairly natural so the environment is really nice.
Naturpark Hohe Wand is outstandingly well shaded so in the hot summer days it is perfectly possible to trek for a while without succumbing to the heat. In a summer known for its plague of mosquitoes across the country, it was really surprising to see only butterflies and hardly any other flying annoyances.
There are a couple of sight seeing points as well as other features on the Hohe Wand like paragliding. A lot of the Hohe Wand routes out of the Naturpark are not accessible for those with wheels.
Hohe Wand is really nice. The Naturpark is a great place for kids in a terrific environment.

If you like conventional paintings of scenery and farm animals, this little place is quite a gem - in particular as you can go outside, take a walk and compare the vistas with the pictures you've seen - that are more than a 100 years old. Gauermann really connected with the surrounding countryside, and so can you!

Lovely Austrian attraction a must-see if in Vienna area. The natural Waterfalls were a source of energy power at one time. Also a great restaurant there with local foods and family run! Great with kids because there's a big playground, but also was wonderful for just the two of us. We climbed the falls, then hiked for another hour. It's a great site to get some fresh mountain air.

Mt. Schneeberg

Reviewed By murrayhiller - murrayhill

At just over 2000 meters, Schneeberg is the first foothill of the Alps. Rising impressively from Puchberg, it's accessible by a cog-wheel railway and is traversed by numerous well-marked paths, some challenging. My advice: get off at the station Baumgartner and take the Nordlicher Grafensteig on the north face of the mountain to Edelweisshütte, a 4 hour walk for good walkers. Then walk down or, stay overnight at Edelweisshütte and attempt the Südlicher Grafensteig: 6 hours through lonely terrain back to the train station. A once-in-a-lifetime encircling of this great mountain

Steinwandklamm

Reviewed By virtual_surround - Vienna, Austria

Steinwandklamm is one of the most beautiful, wildest and most interesting ravines in Lower Austria. In a deep ravine you hike on maintained Bridges and climbed over thundering Waterfalls.
We went in April because than is the best time to visit. If you go in Sommer or later, you won't find lots of water.
It is gifted with flora and fauna, natural gem , it is an experience in itself.
We chosed tour Myräfalle-Steinwandklamm-Türkenloch and I belive it was cca 4 hours one way.. On your way back, there is one shortcut and you need only one hour.
Once when you have the Steinwandklamm behind you, you come to the Turks hole, a cave you can go through and then to the inn-Jagasitz, on 706 m above sea level, with views of the Schneeberg.
Are you and your "little" adventure, you can make about the Rudolf Decker-Steig hiking.
If you choose to Rudolf Decker climbing, demand A / B, with your "little ones," Be aware of your responsibility, secure your children with a "Climbing set". Wore to the "line" do not let them out of sight and only then go with them if they have no fear really.
And another thing: the Rudolf Decker - Steig you are aloved to go only from bottom to top , because of danger of falling rocks. For way home, you have very well signed marks and it is shortcut back through the wood.
It was really wonderful day filled with breath-taking views.
Strongly recommended. :)
