Barra Island Tours

Let Rob or Paul take you to see Barra’s unique tiny airport, where the plane lands on Traigh Mhor (Big Beach). Barra airport is the only one in the world to have scheduled flights landing on a beach, so even if you have flown in it's a sight well worth seeing. See the abandoned village at Balnabodach, and take in the beautiful scenery and wild life that makes Barra what it is.

Rob picked us up from our accommodation in Castlebay and took us all round both Barra and Vatersay. The constant commentary was fascinating and made a huge difference to our visit which would otherwise have been restricted to the town area. Definitely value for money!

Kisimul Castle

Worth a visit to this castle in the harbour surrounded by water. Ferry man goes every half hour in summer months. Only takes a 15 mins to explore. Inside small cottages around a courtyard. Some being renovated. Discrete location of privy off hall made me smile!
Also worth watching ferry moor up so close. Side by side castle seems so small. Amazing ferry doesn't crash into Kisimul castle when manoeuvring.

Barra Heritage & Cultural Centre

Spent an interesting hour looking through the exhibits, especially about Barra Atlantic fishing (where we shopped every day) and the airport where we had coffee and watched the planes land every day. Team were preparing for a local performance and celiedh on fishing industry that sadly we missed. Also worthwhile is the herring trail walk on the old quayside below the museum.

Clearwater Paddling

We kayaked from Barra to Mingulay over several days visiting the Islands of Pabbay and Sandray as well. We explored rocky coastlines and caves, watched puffins and guillemots up close, and landed on and camped near beautiful sandy Beaches. Chris was our guide, using his knowledge of local conditions and tides to make favourable crossings between the Islands, ably assisted by young Chris. We enjoyed fantastic camp dinners with lots of fresh vegetables, and cooked breakfasts every day. Great company- a bunch of strangers at the beginning of the week, a team of friends by the end. The best possible way to visit Mingulay, one of Scotland's most remote and beautiful Islands.

Barra Fishing Charters

We travelled to Mingulay on the " Boy James", ably skippered by Donald and his mate. Lots of wildlife (dolphins/seals) seen on the outward journey. We had 3 hours on the deserted island which gave time to walk over to the stunning western cliffs, and to explore the abandoned settlement.
On the way back we visited a sea cave on the west side, truly awesome experience, before heading back to Castlebay. We can't thank Donald enough for an unforgettabe day.

The Isle of Barra Distillers shop is a great attraction for the Island and the only place on the Island were you can purchase a bottle of the Barra gin. A fantastic place to come and learn more about the story about both the Barra gin and the Isle of Barra distillers. We are on a exciting journey here and we are always keen to share it with anyone that wants to find out more.
