WORLD HERITAGE ROCK ART CENTRE - ALTA MUSEUM Experience one of Northern Europe's largest rock carving sites, inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list. The carvings were made by hunters and gatherers, the oldest carvings are over 7000 years. The rock art park is available in the snow free period. The museum is open all year and features Exhibitions on rock art in Alta and other cultural history Exhibitions. Temporary Exhibitions on themes such as the Northern Lights, angling and art Exhibitions. Cafe with a panoramic view over the Altafjord and souvenir shop. Guided tours for groups by prior arrangement. Audioguides available in Norwegian, English, German and French.
This museum is currently facing reconstruction so some of the panels are not present. This and the fact that the petroglyph outside are not accessible in winter made for a rather short visit. Despite that the material was interesting and we enjoyed the visit. The gift shop was very well stocked.

A modern design with unique interiors. The acoustics are highlighted when the organ is being played. The coffee and excellent waffles served are highly recommended. There is a room with small interactive videos, pictures and interesting models for learning about the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. Very clean loos are available for free. Worth visiting.

Alta Church is located in Bossekop and is a long church of wood/timber with a rear gallery, originally built in 1858 in an English-inspired neo-Gothic style.
A modern construction of concrete and titanium. Inside there is a modern version of the figure of Christ illuminated by daylight coming through the concealed window above.
Worth a look around but it will cost around £4 to enter. Staff speak wonderful English. There is a small cafe for hot drinks.

My misgivings: there are those who wallow in the minutiae of the Third Reich - now, the Nazis had to be defeated or we wouldn't be able to write/read this, but we should move on a bit...
However, this privately-run museum wasn't like that at all. Lots of unique memorabilia, uniforms and equipment. Salvaged bits of the Tirpitz and the occupying troops. Good film about how the thing was eventually sunk. Weird to see midget submariners, filmed in the 1960s, talking about what they did, and seeing German snaps of them on the Tirpitz after capture only looking slightly younger - knowing they'd just planted explosives under the ship they were standing on...
Lots more. The guy in charge showed us exactly where Tirpitz had been for the submarine attack and the aerial attack, also a crater from one of the specially designed bombs that missed.
I wasn't sure initially but all this is necessary viewing.

The northern lights Observatory on Haldde was the first Observatory on the Northern Light. The buildings which are restored, show the life of those who lived and studied the northern lights there.
The view from the highest peak in Alta shows a magnificient view, and is an excellent spot to watch the northern lights during winter. Its also a nice scenic view of the Mountains and fjords around.
You can book a stay in the buildings, and you can even book a room for meetings there.
The Observatory is a inacessible for drive, and its a 2 hours walk from the road, which is 10 minutes drive from Alta.
The trip can be combined with a visit to the remains of the first industrial copper works in Scandinavia, which is located nearby
